The best way to combine Java, Bali and Komodo in one trip is to travel west to east: start in Yogyakarta (optional, for Borobudur), climb Mount Bromo, hike the Ijen crater, cross to Bali for a few days of rest, then fly from Bali (DPS) to Labuan Bajo in just 1 hour 20 minutes for your Komodo boat trip. This order follows the natural geography of Indonesia, saves you from backtracking, and ends the journey on its highest note: dragons, pink beaches and a liveaboard among the islands. Two weeks is enough for the core route; three weeks lets you slow down and enjoy each stop properly.
Why West to East Is the Best Order
Travelers often ask us whether to see Komodo first and Java last. You can, and later in this guide we share a real case from our desk where a guest did exactly that. But for most people, west to east wins for three reasons.
First, logistics get easier as you go. Java travel involves early volcano starts and long drives. Bali is where you recover. Komodo, handled well, is the most effortless part: many flights per day connect Bali to Labuan Bajo, the flight takes 1 hour 20 minutes, and once you board your boat, everything is taken care of. Just 30 minutes after leaving the Labuan Bajo harbor you are already inside Komodo National Park.
Second, the emotional arc is right. Bromo at sunrise is spectacular, Ijen is otherworldly, Bali is restorative, and Komodo is the finale. Guests consistently tell us the trip feels like it builds toward something.
Third, the flight geometry works. Komodo is best reached via Bali; there is no better gateway. The sea route from Lombok to Komodo is one we do not recommend: it means roughly two nights on open sea past Sumbawa, is highly weather dependent, and leaves you only about one day inside the park. Segment 1: Yogyakarta and Borobudur (Optional Start)
If you have three weeks, start here. Yogyakarta is Java’s cultural heart, and a Yogyakarta Borobudur Bromo Bali Komodo overland route is one of the classic journeys in Southeast Asia. Give yourself a sunrise at Borobudur, an afternoon at Prambanan, and an evening in the old city. On a tighter 2 week itinerary, many travelers skip Yogyakarta and fly straight into Surabaya to begin with Bromo. Neither choice is wrong; it is purely a question of time.
Segment 2: Mount Bromo
From Yogyakarta or Surabaya, travel toward the Bromo area and overnight in a village on the caldera rim. The routine is famous: a very early wake-up, a jeep to the viewpoint, sunrise over a sea of volcanic sand, then a walk to the crater itself. Segment 3: Ijen Crater

After Ijen, you have two clean options. The first is to drive down to Banyuwangi and take the short ferry across the strait to Bali, continuing by road to your hotel. The second is to loop back and fly from Surabaya to Bali, which suits travelers who prefer flights over road-and-ferry days. From Bali onward, the rule is simple and worth repeating: to Komodo, always fly DPS to Labuan Bajo. The Bali Chapter: Let Our Bali Team Take Over
Bali deserves more than a transit night. After volcano climbs and pre-dawn alarms, three to five days here resets you for the boat leg ahead. Komodo is not a day-trip destination from Bali; it is a boat destination from Labuan Bajo. Open trips run on a minimum 3D2N format, departing from Labuan Bajo on Fridays to Sundays across all boats, with some vessels also departing Monday to Wednesday. Private charters depart on your schedule. Either way, within 30 minutes of leaving the dermaga you are inside the national park, and the days that follow bring Komodo dragons, Padar’s ridgeline, the pink beach and some of the best snorkeling in Indonesia.
