Here is the route that actually works for a Bali, Lombok and Komodo trip: start in Bali, cross to Lombok and the Gili Islands by fastboat, come back the same way, then fly from Bali (DPS) to Labuan Bajo. That flight takes just 1 hour 20 minutes, with many departures every day, and 30 minutes after leaving the Labuan Bajo pier you are already inside Komodo National Park. What does not work is sailing east from Lombok to Komodo. We will explain why below, because it is one of the most common questions our WhatsApp desk receives.
The Short Answer, Mapped Out
Three islands, one clean loop:
- Bali first. Land at DPS, settle in, enjoy Ubud, Uluwatu or wherever suits you.
- Lombok and the Gilis by sea. Public fastboats run between Bali and the Gili Islands and Lombok. This crossing is short, routine and served daily.
- Back to Bali, then fly to Labuan Bajo. The DPS to Labuan Bajo flight is 1 hour 20 minutes. Our own ground team meets guests at both airports, Bali and Komodo Airport.
- Komodo by boat from Labuan Bajo. Open trips of minimum 3 days 2 nights, or a private charter on your own schedule.
The instinct to keep moving east by boat feels logical on a map. On the water, it is a very different story.
Why We Do Not Recommend Sailing Lombok to Komodo
Over the past year, our WhatsApp desk logged 113 separate conversations from guests asking about a boat from Lombok to Komodo. It is easily one of the most repeated questions we get, and our answer is always honest: we do not recommend it, and we do not sell it.
The sea route from Lombok runs past Sumbawa through long stretches of open water. That means roughly two nights at sea in conditions that depend heavily on the weather, on vessels that vary widely in standard. After all that time on the water, most multi-day Lombok departures leave you with only about one day inside Komodo National Park itself, which is the whole reason you came.
Compare that with the flight: 1 hour 20 minutes from Bali, then 30 minutes from the Labuan Bajo pier and you are inside the park. Every hour you save on transit becomes an hour with the dragons, on Padar’s ridgeline, or snorkeling at Pink Beach. A 12 to 14 Day Itinerary That Flows
This is the shape we suggest most often when guests ask us to combine all three destinations without feeling rushed.
Days 1 to 4: Bali
Arrive at DPS, where our ground team can meet you. Spend your first days recovering from the long-haul flight and enjoying Bali properly: rice terraces and temples around Ubud, cliffside sunsets in Uluwatu, or beach clubs in Canggu. Days 5 to 8: Lombok and the Gili Islands
Take a public fastboat across to the Gilis or Lombok. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air offer that car-free, snorkel-off-the-beach ease, while Lombok itself rewards you with Kuta Lombok’s surf coast and the foothills of Rinjani. Four days lets you split time between a Gili island and mainland Lombok without clock-watching.
Day 9: Return to Bali, Fly to Labuan Bajo
Cross back to Bali by fastboat, then take the 1 hour 20 minute flight from DPS to Labuan Bajo. With many flights operating daily, this connection is straightforward to schedule. Our team is on the ground at both airports, so the handover between the Bali chapter and the Komodo chapter of your trip is seamless. Days 10 to 12: Komodo National Park by Boat
This is the crescendo. Board in Labuan Bajo and within 30 minutes of the pier you are inside the national park. Over three days and two nights you cover Padar’s famous viewpoint, meet Komodo dragons on Komodo or Rinca, snorkel Pink Beach, and drift with manta rays at Manta Point.
Days 13 to 14: Buffer and Departure
Fly back to Bali and keep a relaxed final day before your international flight home. A buffer day is the quiet hero of any multi-island itinerary; it absorbs any schedule change without stress.

Choosing Your Komodo Boat: Open/Shared Trip or Private
The boat leg out of Labuan Bajo comes in two forms, and the right one depends on how you travel.
Open trip (shared cabin cruise). The minimum format is 3 days 2 nights. All boats depart Friday through Sunday, and a number of boats also depart Monday through Wednesday. You book a private cabin and share the itinerary with other guests. It is sociable, well priced, and covers the park’s icons. The weekend departure rhythm is worth planning around: if your Lombok leg ends midweek, check whether your preferred boat runs Monday to Wednesday, or add a night in Labuan Bajo town.

First, sequencing: guests worry the back-and-forth to Bali wastes time, until they see that the flight is shorter than most Gili fastboat crossings feel. Second, departure days: the Friday to Sunday open trip pattern surprises people, so we help them either time the Lombok leg to land on a weekend or switch to a private charter. Third, weather: the Bali to Labuan Bajo flight runs year-round with many daily departures, which is precisely why we route everyone through the air rather than across the Sumbawa sea.
