Uluwatu to Komodo Island takes about half a day, door to boat: 30 to 45 minutes from the Bukit to Denpasar airport, a flight of one hour and ten to fifteen minutes to Labuan Bajo, then a short drive to the harbour. Leave your villa after an early breakfast and you can be under way through the national park by early afternoon. The route rewards planning; it does not require effort, provided someone else is holding the schedule.

Uluwatu, Pecatu, Bingin & Ungasan to DPS
Guests sometimes assume the Bukit is remote. For this journey, the opposite is true. Uluwatu sits thirty to forty-five minutes from Denpasar airport, closer than Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud on almost any morning. The peninsula that feels far from everything is, for once, the nearest place to start.
We know this stretch of road in unusual detail, because we drive it more than any other. Uluwatu and Pecatu are our largest pickup area this month, ahead of Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud, and the Renaissance Uluwatu is one of the hotels we collect from routinely. The drivers are ours, not a vendor’s. They know which gate a villa estate uses, how long the Jimbaran stretch takes at six in the morning, and when to leave so you arrive composed rather than merely early.
The pickup time is set against your flight, with margin but without waste. You are not asked to stand in a lobby at dawn waiting for a driver who may or may not appear.
The same team is available before the sailing as well. Many guests keep a car and driver for their Bali days, for tailored journeys to the temples, the east coast or a long lunch in Ubud, and then roll the same arrangement into the airport run. One relationship carries through the whole stay, which is quieter than rebuilding it every morning.
The Flight
Denpasar to Komodo Airport takes about one hour and ten to fifteen minutes. Several airlines fly the route each day, most usefully in the morning. A morning departure is what makes same-day sailing possible, and we book it, monitor it and adjust around it as part of the journey.
At DPS, our VIP domestic departure service removes the terminal from the experience. Your bags are taken at the kerb, check-in is handled on your behalf, and you are escorted to the gate. The domestic terminal at Denpasar is efficient but rarely calm; this is the difference between passing through it and being processed by it.
One note for guests arriving into Bali from abroad and continuing to Komodo within a day or two: immigration at DPS is busiest between 18:00 and 21:00, when the long-haul arrivals land together. If your itinerary threads that window, our international fast-track meets you before the queue forms.
One Company, Door to Door
Most Komodo trips are assembled from separate vendors: a driver booked through the villa, a flight booked alone, a boat operator found online, a return transfer arranged by someone’s cousin in Labuan Bajo. Each handoff is a point where the plan can slip, and none of the parties answers for the others.

Nothing obliges you to take all of it. Some guests want only the flight, boat and transfers. Others add a Sylvia Hill sunset in Labuan Bajo, the two-day stay at Wae Rebo, a Manggarai village recognised by UNESCO, or the four-day overland crossing of Flores that ends with sunrise over the Kelimutu crater lakes. You can choose only the services you need and leave the rest.
The return works the same way in reverse. On disembarkation morning our team handles VIP departure at Labuan Bajo, meets you again on arrival in Bali, and drives you back up to the Bukit; guests flying home instead of returning to the villa are handed from the domestic gate to international fast-track without leaving our care. The complete end-to-end journey starts from USD 5,000 per person on a private charter basis, and the per-person figure falls as the group grows.
The Sailing
The boats are phinisi, the traditional two-masted vessels of the Bugis shipwrights, built in timber and finished to a standard the original builders would not recognise. Three days and two nights is the sensible minimum. It allows the ranger-led walk among the dragons on Komodo or Rinca, the ridge climb on Padar, the pink sand beach and the manta cleaning stations, without any of it feeling scheduled.
The rhythm of the days settles quickly. Mornings are for the walks and the ridgelines, before the heat arrives; middays for anchorages and long lunches on deck; afternoons for the water, when the light goes soft and the mantas are most reliable. Dinner is served as the islands turn to silhouettes. Nobody checks the time much after the first day, which is rather the point of a boat.
There are two ways to sail. A share trip gives you a private en-suite cabin on one of our scheduled departures, from USD 300 to 580 per person for three days and two nights, depending on the vessel and cabin. A private charter gives you the whole boat, your own dates and your own itinerary, priced per night per vessel. Couples tend to start with the first and come back for the second.
The Komodo National Park fee is excluded and subject to prevailing government regulation; our team confirms the current amount when you book. It is paid once per trip, per person.
Surf-to-Sail
Most of our Uluwatu guests fall into two groups, and they overlap: surfers and honeymooners. Both have spent the week looking at the Indian Ocean from a cliff, a sea that is all energy, swell lines stacked to the horizon.
Komodo is a different sea. The park’s anchorages are sheltered and quiet, the water turns to glass by late afternoon, and the swimming is the kind you do straight off the stern. Snorkelling here is not a consolation activity; the reefs are among the healthiest in Indonesia, and the mantas at the cleaning stations are a fixture, not a rumour. Surfers tend to arrive tired and leave restored. Honeymooners get the sunset deck to themselves.
The two coasts make a complete fortnight: a week of reef breaks and cliff-top evenings on the Bukit, then three or four days of still water among the islands. The contrast is the point.

What should I pack for the sailing?
Little. Light clothing, swimwear, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and closed shoes for the ranger walks on Komodo and Padar. Evenings on deck can be breezy under way, so one light layer is worth having. Snorkelling equipment is on board, and the dress code is informal by design.
Is Komodo worth it after Bali?
In our view it is the better half of the trip. Bali gives you the villa, the surf and the restaurants. Komodo gives you dragons, empty ridgelines, mantas and a sea with almost nobody on it. The two are one short flight apart and do not resemble each other, which is precisely the argument for doing both.
