Jakarta has a direct flight of about 4 hours every day; from Bali count on about 5 hours with one stop. International arrivals connect through an Indonesian hub, usually Jakarta; direct services change seasonally, so check current airline schedules, a connection may be needed. Step 1: Fly to Sorong (SOQ)

Sorong is the gateway city on the Bird’s Head Peninsula of Southwest Papua, and Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) is the airport most visitors use for Raja Ampat, so plan on Sorong. Daily jet connections run from:

• Jakarta (CGK): a direct flight of about 4 hours, flown daily by Garuda Indonesia and Batik Air. The overnight sector lands between 06:00 and 06:35, with a second bank arriving around midday. This is the route most international arrivals use.
• Makassar (UPG): about 2 hours, the busiest hub for eastern Indonesia, with a morning arrival bank around 07:00 and a second around 14:00.
• Manado (MDC): about 1.5 hours, useful if you are combining North Sulawesi diving, though frequencies are thin.

Most flights land in Sorong early in the morning, which is deliberate: it lets ferry and liveaboard connections happen the same day. Sorong runs on Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT, UTC+9), two hours ahead of Jakarta and one hour ahead of Bali and Singapore, which is why an overnight sector out of Jakarta lands in daylight without costing you a day on the water. Direct services from Singapore change seasonally; check current airline schedules, a connection through Jakarta is usually needed, so the usual route is Singapore to Jakarta, then the overnight Jakarta to Sorong sector. Fly into Jakarta, typically via Singapore, Doha or Tokyo, then take the overnight domestic flight to Sorong. From the US West Coast the full journey runs 30 to 36 hours, so plan a buffer night in Jakarta or Bali before the boat. A missed international connection should never cost you the charter departure.

Step 2. From Sorong: ferry, speedboat or liveaboard pickup

Option A: Sorong to Waisai public ferry

Fast ferries cross the Dampier Strait from Sorong’s Pelabuhan Rakyat to Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat Regency on Waigeo Island, in about 2 hours. There are usually two departures daily each way, one in the morning and one in the early afternoon; timetables change, so confirm locally the day before. Waisai is the jump-off point for homestays and island resorts on the northern route, and the fare is a fixed public rate paid at the port.

Option B: Private speedboat

One operational warning worth more than any packing list: Sorong has more than one port area in common use, and locals use the names loosely. Confirm your exact boarding point in writing before you fly. Two government charges apply per person, a marine park entry permit and a regency visitor entry ticket, and both are excluded from charter rates. Which arrival option fits which traveller

If you are staying at a Waisai-area homestay or resort, the public ferry is the workhorse: inexpensive, reliable, and timed to the morning flight bank. If your accommodation is on a further island, Gam, Kri, Arborek or the Fam group, a private speedboat saves an extra transfer, because it runs door to door from Sorong harbour. If your trip is boat-based from the start, boarding in Sorong is the cleanest choice of all: one airport, one harbour, zero repacking. When to travel: the sea leg by season

Raja Ampat sails from October to April, so 2027 means two bookable windows, January to April and October onward. November to March brings the most settled seas and the most dependable manta activity at the Dampier Strait cleaning stations, which is also when every transfer, ferry, speedboat or crossing, is smoothest. • Luggage: domestic fares to Sorong often include only 20 kg checked baggage; divers should pre-purchase extra allowance and weigh bags before the international leg, not in Sorong.
• Tickets: one through-ticket protects you if the Jakarta leg runs late. If you split tickets, allow time to clear immigration, collect bags and re-check on the domestic side.
• Cash: ATMs exist in Sorong and Waisai but are unreliable in the islands; carry rupiah for incidentals.
