There is no boat from Bali to Komodo. The trip is a fly-and-sail itinerary: you fly Denpasar (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) in about one hour fifteen minutes, then board your yacht in Labuan Bajo harbour and sail the park from there. Around five nonstop flights run daily, the last leaving Bali mid-afternoon.
Does the boat actually leave from Bali?
It does not, and this is the single most common misunderstanding we correct before a booking is confirmed. French and Italian guests in particular arrive at the enquiry stage expecting a departure from Benoa or Serangan, because the phrase they searched, a Komodo cruise from Bali, reads like a port-to-port sailing.
Komodo National Park is a separate island group in East Nusa Tenggara, one province east of Bali. Every serious operator boards guests at Labuan Bajo on the west tip of Flores. That is where the harbour, the fuel, the provisioning and the park authority all sit. So a Bali to Komodo island tour package is really two joined pieces: a domestic flight leg, then a sailing leg. Once you separate them in your head, the rest of the planning becomes arithmetic rather than guesswork.
How long is the flight, and how many go each day?
The nonstop DPS–LBJ hop takes roughly 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 minutes in the air. Route schedule data shows about five departures per day on average, around 34 per week, rising in July–August and the Christmas–New Year window.
Batik Air, Garuda Indonesia and Indonesia AirAsia are the carriers most consistently scheduled on the route. Booking inventories also surface Wings Air, Citilink, Super Air Jet and TransNusa at different points in the year, so the airline list you see depends on the month you search.
Komodo Airport itself is no longer the small strip it was a decade ago. Indonesia’s civil aviation authority lists a runway of 2,750 m by 45 m, with declared takeoff and landing distances of 2,650 m, and the rebuilt terminal is rated at roughly 1.1 million passengers per year. It now carries international status.

What time do you have to leave Bali to make the first sail?
Work backwards from the boat, not from the flight. A 3D2N itinerary earns its first afternoon only if you are aboard by early afternoon, which in practice means taking a departure from Bali before roughly 10:00.
Land on the 07:00 wave and you are at the harbour before mid-morning, aboard by late morning, and the vessel can clear Labuan Bajo in time to reach the first anchorage with daylight to spare. That first afternoon usually buys a snorkel stop and a sunset at anchor rather than a transit spent watching the coastline.
Take the last departure of the day instead, around 16:45, and you land in the dark. Scheduled traffic at LBJ is concentrated in daylight hours, and no responsible captain starts a park transit at night on a first evening. That flight is a hotel night in Labuan Bajo, not a sailing afternoon.
On our own vessels we hold boarding open for the mid-morning arrival bank and shift the day-one route rather than the departure time. On yacht rentals departing Labuan Bajo generally, the same rule applies: the crew adjusts the itinerary, not the sunset.
Can you connect from an international arrival on the same day?
Technically yes. Practically, almost never, and we advise against booking it.
Ngurah Rai publishes a minimum connection time of 75 minutes for international-to-domestic transfers. The terminals are linked by a covered walkway you can cover in 5 to 10 minutes. Everything else in between is the problem: immigration, baggage reclaim, customs, then re-check on what is usually a separate ticket.
Transfer guides converge on 2.5 to 3 hours as a realistic buffer for an unassisted passenger in season. Add the arrival pattern: long-haul flights from Europe and the Gulf hubs feed Bali in a late-night bank, with the heaviest congestion between 22:00 and 01:00. A guest landing at midnight is not making a 07:00 domestic departure in any comfortable sense.
The pattern that works, and the one most of our European guests end up on, is one night in Bali, the early flight the next morning, and the boat that afternoon. It costs a hotel night and saves the first day of the charter.
Why is three days and two nights the standard?
Because the park’s best anchorages are spread across a distance that only makes sense with two sailing nights. Padar’s ridge, the Komodo Island ranger trail, Pantai Merah, and the manta cleaning stations at Karang Makassar sit far enough apart that a single night forces you to drop at least two of them.
The overnight legs are the trick. A yacht repositions while guests sleep, which converts what would be four hours of daytime transit into four hours of anchored rest. That is the structural reason a Komodo liveaboard itinerary covers ground a day-trip speedboat cannot.

Three days also matches the flight grid cleanly. Fly in on the early departure, sail two nights, disembark on the morning of day three, and you can still take an afternoon flight back to Bali the same day. Two nights is the shortest itinerary where nobody has to rush.
Is sailing from Bali or Lombok instead a real option?
It exists, and it is a genuinely different product. Multi-day one-way sailing routes run from Bali or Lombok east through Sumbawa, Moyo and Satonda before reaching Komodo, typically sold as four to six days depending on the starting port and operator.
What you gain is the passage itself. What you lose is time in the park, cabin standard, and schedule control, because the open crossings east of Lombok are exposed and the itinerary bends to conditions. If your reason for coming is Komodo rather than the transit, fly the leg and spend the days at anchor. If the passage is the point, the sailing route is honest about what it is.
What has to be arranged before you step aboard?
The 2026 Komodo National Park entry permit is a dated ticket at IDR 650,000 per person, roughly USD 40. It is tied to a specific date, which is why we ask for passport details and confirmed sailing dates well before departure rather than at the dock. Guests who buy at the last minute are the ones who discover a quota problem on the morning they wanted to walk Padar.
Fees are not always bundled into a headline price elsewhere, which is the recurring complaint on French travel forums. Ask any operator, including us, whether park entry, ranger escort and harbour fees sit inside the quoted figure or outside it. On a private whole-boat charter in Komodo the answer should be written into the confirmation, not explained verbally.

Which months make the transfer easy, and when should you book?
The dry season, roughly May to October, gives the calmest water and the most reliable flight days. Rainfall in the Flores west monsoon is not a light shower: monthly averages reach 486 mm in January and 521 mm in February, against 27 mm in August and 34 mm in July.
Underwater visibility follows the same curve, commonly reported around 30 m in the dry months and falling to 10–15 m in January. Mantas are seen year-round at the cleaning stations, so the season question is really about sea state and flight reliability rather than whether the animals are there.
