Yes, you can see Komodo and Raja Ampat in a single trip, and the connection is simpler than most travelers expect. The route runs Bali → Labuan Bajo for Komodo, back through Bali (DPS) or Jakarta, then onward to Sorong (SOQ), the gateway to Raja Ampat. The order depends on the calendar: from October to April, Raja Ampat is in its prime season, so we build itineraries around it and let Komodo play the opening act. Plan 14 to 17 days for the full journey, because Raja Ampat charters run per vessel per night with a minimum of 7 nights on board.
Why These Two Icons Belong in One Itinerary
Komodo and Raja Ampat sit at opposite ends of eastern Indonesia’s marine crescent, and they complement each other rather than compete. Komodo gives you dragons on Rinca and Komodo islands, pink-sand beaches, the Padar ridgeline, and manta channels, all within easy reach: about 30 minutes from the Labuan Bajo pier and you are already inside Komodo National Park. Raja Ampat gives you the richest reef biodiversity ever recorded, limestone karst lagoons, and a wilderness feeling that only a week or more at sea can deliver.
Here is the part most itineraries miss. From roughly December to March, when Komodo’s seas can turn windy, Raja Ampat is at its calmest and clearest. That overlap is not a problem to work around; it is the reason the combination works so well. You spend a shorter, well-timed window in Komodo, then settle into Raja Ampat exactly when it is at its best. Our own WhatsApp desk logged 39 Raja Ampat conversations in the past 12 months, and the pattern in what guests actually ask us is consistent: they want both icons, one trip, and someone to handle the seams between them. One family has already asked us to hold a private charter for 12 guests over 10 nights in December 2027, which tells you how far ahead serious Raja Ampat planning runs.
Komodo vs Raja Ampat: How They Compare
| Komodo National Park | Raja Ampat | |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway | Labuan Bajo (LBJ), 1 hour 20 minutes from Bali (DPS) with many flights per day | Sorong (SOQ), reached via Jakarta or Bali connections |
| Time to the action | About 30 minutes from the pier and you are inside the national park | Half a day or more of cruising from Sorong into the core areas |
| Main season | Year-round, calmest roughly April to November | October to April |
| Trip format | Open trips from 3D2N (departing Friday to Sunday on all vessels, Monday to Wednesday on some) or private charter | Private charter per vessel per night, USD 6,400 to 35,000, minimum 7 nights |
| Signature moments | Komodo dragons, Padar sunrise, Pink Beach, manta points | Karst lagoons of Wayag and Misool, reef walls, birds-of-paradise |
| Best for | First taste of Indonesian liveaboard life, mixed groups, shorter windows | Divers, honeymooners, photographers, and anyone with a full week for the sea |
Notice the pricing logic differs by destination. In Komodo, an open trip lets you book by the cabin and join a shared departure. In Raja Ampat, the market works per vessel: you take the whole boat, and the nightly rate covers your entire group. For a party of eight or ten, that per-vessel math is often more reasonable than it first appears, and it buys total privacy.
A Sample 14 to 17 Day Route: Bali, Komodo, Then Raja Ampat
This is the shape of the itinerary we build most often for October to April departures.
Days 1 to 3: Bali
Land at DPS, shake off the flight, and let our Bali team’s collection handle the island days: private villas, Ubud, a cliff dinner, whatever suits your pace. Bali is also your logistics anchor, since both onward gateways connect through it.

Days 4 to 7: Komodo
Fly Bali to Labuan Bajo, 1 hour 20 minutes, with many flights per day to choose from. Our own ground team meets you at both ends, at Bali and at Komodo Airport, so the handover is seamless. Board your vessel and within 30 minutes of the pier you are inside Komodo National Park: dragons, Padar, Pink Beach, manta channels. A 3D2N or 4D3N sailing covers the highlights; our Bali to Komodo tour packages lay out the standard combinations. Guests choosing an open trip should know the rhythm: minimum 3D2N, with departures Friday to Sunday on all vessels and Monday to Wednesday on some.
Day 8: The Connection
Fly Labuan Bajo back to Bali, then connect to Sorong via DPS or Jakarta. Most guests overnight along the way and arrive in Sorong rested rather than racing a same-day connection. One travel day well spent protects the whole second half of the trip.
Days 9 to 16: Raja Ampat
Board your private charter in Sorong and disappear into the archipelago for the 7-night minimum, or longer if the calendar allows. Wayag’s karst towers, Misool’s southern lagoons, the Dampier Strait’s currents and fish storms. Charter rates run USD 6,400 to 35,000 per vessel per night depending on the yacht, and the Raja Ampat yacht charter page explains how vessel class shapes that range. For route details by month, our guide to Raja Ampat liveaboard routes, seasons, and cost goes deeper.
Day 17: Home via Sorong
Disembark in Sorong and fly out through Jakarta or Bali. If you can spare a buffer night in Bali before the long-haul home, take it.
One route we deliberately do not sell: sailing from Lombok to Komodo. That passage means roughly two nights in open sea past Sumbawa, is heavily weather-dependent, and typically leaves only about one day inside the park. The fix is simple: fly via Bali and spend those saved days where they count.

For Groups and Divers: The LASHA

When a party wants Raja Ampat done properly, we point them to our flagship LASHA: 52 meters, 10 cabins, and a dedicated dive deck built for exactly this kind of expedition. A vessel that size absorbs a multi-generational family or a full dive group without anyone tripping over tanks at breakfast, and the dive deck keeps the gear workflow off the guest areas entirely. She anchors the top of our fleet, which in Komodo waters also includes Ayvara, Malca, Catnazse, and Naturalia, so guests who sail with us in Komodo can step up to LASHA scale for the Papua leg. The same standard runs through our wider luxury cruise Indonesia collection, and if you are still deciding which corners of the archipelago deserve your days, our piece on luxury cruising in Indonesia beyond Bali maps the options.
Sorong Logistics, Handled
Sorong is a working harbor town, not a resort destination, and that is fine because you only need it for a few hours. The practical points: arrive the day before boarding when possible, keep checked luggage soft-sided for the tender transfer, and carry your passport for the Raja Ampat marine park entry permit, which your charter team arranges as part of boarding. Cash needs are minimal once you are on board a full-board charter. We coordinate the airport-to-pier transfer so the only decision you make in Sorong is where to sit for the first stretch of cruising.
