Komodo Island lies in the Flores Sea of East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia — between Sumbawa and Flores, at the heart of Komodo National Park — roughly 400 km east of Bali and a 2-hour boat ride from Labuan Bajo. It is the largest island of the park that carries its name, home to the world’s biggest lizard and to exactly one way in: by sea.
Komodo Island on the Map
Find Flores on a map of Indonesia, slide west past Labuan Bajo, and the big island filling the strait before Sumbawa is Komodo — flanked by Rinca to the south-east, Padar between them, and a scatter of satellites (Kelor, Kalong, Kanawa, Taka Makassar) that make up the sailing circuit. The whole cluster is the national park; the island itself covers about 390 km² of savanna ridges and fjord-like bays. For where the dragons actually range across these islands, our habitat guide carries the distribution map.
How to Get to Komodo Island
Three steps, no exceptions: fly to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) — 75-90 minutes from Bali, routes in our flights guide; transfer ten minutes to the harbour; board a boat. Coming from Bali end-to-end? The full journey is mapped in from Bali to Komodo Island.
What to See on Komodo Island
Loh Liang — the Dragon Treks
The island’s ranger station runs short, medium and long guided treks through dragon territory — savanna, tamarind forest and waterholes where the big males wait. Sightings are near-guaranteed; behaviour is the variable that makes each trek different.
The Beaches — Including the Pink One
Komodo beach means more than one thing: the famous Pink Beach on the north-east coast, white-sand coves along the west, and reef flats that drop straight into snorkelling grounds. Most are anchorage-only — another argument for sleeping aboard.
The Animals Beyond the Dragon
Timor deer graze the station lawns, wild boar and buffalo work the valleys, cockatoos and megapodes hold the treeline, and the water does the rest — turtles, reef sharks and, in season, mantas. The dragon is the headline, not the whole show.

There are no public hotels on the island itself — visitors sleep aboard boats anchored in its bays or in Labuan Bajo. That single fact is why the liveaboard format defines this destination.

No — wild dragons also live on Rinca, Gili Motang, Nusa Kode and coastal Flores, but Komodo and Rinca hold the two major populations and the only visitor treks.
