Raja Ampat Islands Guide: Wayag, Piaynemo, Misool & Beyond

Dernière mise à jour : août 2026 · Prix et disponibilités vérifiés pour la saison 2026/2027

Raja Ampat — the “Four Kings” — is an archipelago of roughly 1,500 islands off West Papua, Indonesia, built around four crowned giants: Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool. It holds the richest marine biodiversity on Earth, and its icons — Wayag’s karst towers, Piaynemo’s viewpoint, the Dampier Strait’s manta lanes — are spread across distances only a boat can stitch together.

Wayag: the Karst Icon

The photo that sells Raja Ampat: cone-karst islets scattered across turquoise lagoons, seen from the Wayag viewpoint after a steep 30-minute scramble. Wayag sits in the far north-west — 6+ hours from the Waisai corridor — which is why it belongs to liveaboard routes, not day trips. Rangers collect the site fee at the post below the trail.

Piaynemo & the Fam Islands

Wayag’s reachable sibling in the Fam group: a boardwalk climb to the five-islet panorama, doable as a (long) day trip from Waisai but transformed at first light when you slept at anchor beneath it. The hidden lagoon of Telaga Bintang — the “star lagoon” — is a tender-ride away.

The Dampier Strait: Kri, Arborek & Manta Sandy

The strait between Waigeo and Batanta is the region’s marine engine: Cape Kri holds one of the highest fish counts ever recorded on a single dive, Arborek village pairs a model homestay community with a jetty full of life, and Manta Sandy runs a regulated manta-viewing line in season. This corridor is where most first Raja Ampat trips are won.

Misool: the Wild South

A separate expedition in itself, 4-5 hours’ sailing south: soft-coral walls, hidden lagoons like Balbulol, ancient rock art on limestone overhangs, and a conservation-area mosaic that keeps boat numbers low. Misool is the reason to add days, not the add-on.

Exploring by Phinisi

The archipelago’s geography — icons hundreds of kilometres apart, no roads, few flights — makes the liveaboard the only honest way to see it whole. Our Raja Ampat yacht charter desk routes 5-12 night voyages from Sorong or Waisai across all four corridors above; quiet-season macro divers detour to Aljui Bay’s pearl-farm jetties, and long-haul sailors arrive via the Banda Sea crossing.

Getting There, Briefly

Fly to Sorong (DEO) via Jakarta or Makassar; charters board at Sorong harbour or after the 2-hour ferry to Waisai. Raja Ampat levies a marine-park entry tariff collected per visitor — current rates and payment points are confirmed at booking (the system has changed several times; verify before you fly).

Foire aux Questions

How many islands are in Raja Ampat?

Around 1,500 islands and cays across the archipelago, anchored by the four “kings”: Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool.

Wayag or Piaynemo — which viewpoint should I choose?

Piaynemo if your route stays in the Dampier corridor (boardwalk, day-trippable); Wayag if you are on a liveaboard heading north — steeper, wilder, and the definitive panorama. Routes with time do both.

Quelle est la meilleure période pour visiter Raja Ampat?

October to April — the settled season with the calmest crossings and peak manta activity; mid-year belongs to wind, swell and the Komodo calendar instead.

Can you visit Raja Ampat without diving?

Absolutely — snorkellers get Arborek’s jetty, Piaynemo’s lagoons and Manta Sandy from the surface, and the karst hikes ask nothing but legs. Divers simply add the deeper version of the same sites.
