Which is easier to get to?
Komodo wins on access, and it isn’t close. Is Komodo safe to visit in 2027 after the 2026 earthquake?
A fair question, and one we answer from the ground. On August 15, 2026, an M7.7 earthquake struck the sea north of Flores, about 200 km northeast of Labuan Bajo. BMKG’s tsunami warning was lifted within hours after no destructive tsunami formed; the Labuan Bajo Harbormaster officially reopened sailing the same day (Maklumat Pelayaran No. 05/MP-VIII/2026); Komodo Airport’s runway was declared safe and kept operating; and Komodo National Park never closed. Our own boats returned to the water that same afternoon, and trips have run normally since. So far, conditions in Labuan Bajo remain calm and fully operational — and by 2027, the event will be well behind the destination’s day-to-day reality.
