Padar Island is the third-largest island in Komodo National Park, Indonesia — the one behind the famous three-bay viewpoint photo — sitting midway between Komodo and Rinca, about 2 hours by boat from Labuan Bajo. There are no roads, no dragons in visitor areas and no hotels: you come for the hike, the beaches and the light, then sleep on a boat.
The Viewpoint Hike: Stairs, Time & Difficulty
The trail is a built staircase of roughly 780-800 steps climbing about 200 metres to the main viewpoint. Fit hikers top out in 25-30 minutes; a relaxed pace with photo stops takes 45. Difficulty is moderate — the grade is steady rather than steep, but there is zero shade, which is why every crew in the park runs it at dawn.
Sunrise logistics: boats anchor in the north bay around 4.45-5.00 am, tenders run to the jetty by 5.15, and first light hits the ridgeline around 5.45-6.00 depending on season. The reward is the panorama that sells Komodo: three crescent bays — one white-sand, one grey-black, one pink — fanning out beneath a dinosaur-spine ridge.
Padar’s Three Beaches — Including a Pink One
Each bay hides a different beach. The north bay’s white crescent is the swim stop; the east bay runs dark volcanic sand; and the south bay holds Padar’s own pink beach — quieter than the famous Pink Beach on Komodo Island and reachable only when boats route the south side in settled weather. Counting both, the park holds several pink-sand coves, and Padar’s is the one most visitors never see.

Dry season (April-November) delivers the classic amber-hills shot; December-March turns the ridges green and the skies dramatic. Photographers: the composition works best from the second (not final) platform with a 16-24mm lens; golden hour on the west face beats sunrise for warm sidelight; and drones need a park permit arranged in advance.
