Komodo in September: Calm Seas, Clear Water, and Room to Breathe

August 9, 2026 Sailing Experience

Last updated: August 2026 · Prices & availability verified for the 2026/2027 season

September is the month our crews pick when friends ask them when to come. The dry season still holds, the July-August rush is gone, seas around the park sit at their calmest, and snorkel visibility runs 20 to 30 meters. In our booking data, 125 booking parties chose September 2026, led by Germans, Americans, Italians, and Dutch.

Komodo September weather and sea conditions

September sits at the tail of Komodo’s dry season, which runs from April to November. Expect sun most of the day, light southeast winds, and crossings between islands that stay comfortable for guests who worry about seasickness. Water temperature holds around 25-27°C. Padar’s viewpoint stays dusty gold, which photographs better than the green of the wet months.

What you will actually see

The dragons on Komodo and Rinca do not care what month it is. Mantas hold station at Karang Makassar year-round, with sightings on most September departures. Pink Beach, Padar sunrise, and Kanawa snorkeling all run on the standard 3D2N route — take a cabin on a shared open trip or the whole boat as a Komodo liveaboard. September’s advantage is doing all of it with fewer boats anchored beside you.

The booking window is shorter than it looks

Here is the part most travelers misjudge. Across 1,063 bookings we tracked, 91% of the cabins a month ends up selling are already sold one month before departure. September behaves the same way. On top of that, Komodo National Park now issues dated entry tickets under an annual cap of 365,000 visitors, and in 2026 September dates were selling out five weeks ahead. Last-minute is possible, about 10% of our guests book under two weeks out, but cabin choice by then is whatever is left.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is September dry season in Komodo?

Yes. The dry season runs April to November, and September combines dry weather with calm seas and thinner crowds than July or August.

How is diving and snorkeling in September?

Visibility runs 20 to 30 meters on most sites, water sits at 25-27°C, and mantas appear at Karang Makassar on most departures.

Is Komodo crowded in September?

Less than in July and August. School holidays in Europe end late August, so anchorages and the Padar trail clear out noticeably in the first September week.

How far ahead should I book a September trip?

Two months ahead gives you full cabin choice. By one month out, 91% of the cabins that will sell are gone, and dated park tickets add a second limit.
