December in Komodo is two different months wearing one name. The first three weeks run quiet: wet-season showers pass through some afternoons, boats thin out, and manta aggregations at Karang Makassar approach their annual peak. Then Christmas week arrives and every cabin in Labuan Bajo harbor fills at once. Our December manifest is dominated by Australians on summer holiday, joined by Europeans trading winter for 30-degree deck mornings.
Yes, it rains. Here is what that actually means
December sits in the wet season, and we will not pretend otherwise. In practice rain arrives as showers, often in the afternoon or overnight, with sailing and snorkeling continuing around them. Seas carry more movement than September. In exchange the islands turn green, the light after rain goes soft and dramatic, and the plankton that rain washes into the channels is exactly why December mantas are the best of the year.
Manta season peaks now
December through February is peak aggregation at Karang Makassar. On good days our guides count mantas in the dozens. If mantas are the reason you are coming to Komodo, December is not a compromise month. It is the target — and a multi-night Komodo liveaboard puts you at the cleaning stations before the day boats arrive.
The festive window sells out. The rest of December does not
Between 20 December and 2 January, demand triples. Australians book their summer holidays, European festive escapes land, and Indonesian and Singaporean travelers join for year-end. In December 2025 most festive-window guests booked within the final 60 days and cabins ran out; our 2026 fleet is larger, and we expect the window to fill earlier. Book the festive window by October. Early December, by contrast, is one of the easiest open-trip bookings of the year.

Our December bookings show a different crowd from the European-summer months: Australians lead, French and British festive travelers follow, and Indonesian domestic guests take year-end cabins. New Year’s Eve on deck typically toasts in four or five languages.
