No airline flies nonstop from North America to Labuan Bajo. Plan on two connections after the ocean crossing, an Asian hub and then Bali, with 20 to 32 hours of elapsed travel and one calendar day surrendered to the date line. Budget nine to ten days door to door, and sail four nights rather than two.
American and Canadian guests ask sharper questions about the vessel than almost any market we serve, and then underbudget the calendar. Indonesia logged 418,190 visits from the United States in 2024, and most of that traffic plans around Bali rather than around the eastern islands. What follows is the arithmetic our reservations desk sends when a family in Denver or Calgary asks whether a whole-boat private charter in Komodo is realistic on the days they can actually take off work.
How long does the journey from North America really take?
Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo (LBJ) handles domestic traffic only. Every North American guest therefore flies three sectors: an ocean crossing to an Asian hub, a hop to Denpasar or Jakarta, and a short domestic leg east.
The ocean crossing is the long part, and Singapore Airlines makes it the simplest. Published block times run 17 hours 50 minutes from Los Angeles, roughly 17 hours 30 minutes from San Francisco, about 17 hours from Seattle, and 19 hours 15 minutes from New York JFK, one of the longest scheduled flights operating anywhere.
The second sector is easy. Singapore to Denpasar is flown by seven airlines at roughly 114 departures a week, close to sixteen a day, with the first at 06:20 and the last at 21:35. Airborne time is 2 hours 35 minutes.
The third sector is short and entirely morning-weighted. Denpasar to Labuan Bajo takes 65 to 70 minutes and is flown by carriers including Batik Air, Citilink and Wings Air, at four to six departures a day in low season and eight to ten in high season. Published timetables show the first wheels-up around 06:55 and the last around 16:45.
Add it up and the aggregators agree with us. The fastest published one-stop itinerary from Los Angeles to Labuan Bajo runs 19 hours 55 minutes; ordinary bookings land between 26 and 27 hours. From the East Coast, add roughly five hours to whatever the West Coast number is.
Is Jakarta ever the better connection?
Sometimes. Garuda Indonesia flies Jakarta to Labuan Bajo in about 2 hours 25 minutes, once or twice daily. If your long-haul ticket routes through Jakarta rather than Bali, taking that flight saves you a backtrack. If your ticket lands in Bali, ignore Jakarta entirely.
Which hub should you connect through?
For the United States, Singapore is the cleanest single answer: a nonstop from four gateways, then sixteen daily chances to reach Bali. Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei and Hong Kong all work, but they usually pair with a longer layover or a Jakarta routing rather than a same-morning Bali connection.
Canada reads differently. Air Canada’s transpacific network reaches 13 Asian destinations in 2026, and almost all of it is Vancouver-based: 26 weekly flights to Tokyo Narita in summer 2026, seven to Tokyo Haneda, fourteen to Taipei, and Bangkok at three weekly in summer rising to seven in winter. Toronto regains a nonstop to Shanghai in summer 2026.
What should Quebec and Montreal travellers plan for?
Montreal has no nonstop Asian service in Air Canada’s 2026 route announcements. From YUL that means three flights before Bali, or a routing through Toronto, Vancouver, a US gateway or Europe. Practically, a Montreal departure needs one more overnight built into the plan than a Vancouver departure does.
Quebec is not a rounding error in our enquiry book. In the most recent sampled window, 68 North American households wrote to our Meta channels, and a recognisable share of them wrote from Quebec, some of them in French. Why do you lose a day flying out and get one back coming home?
Crossing the International Date Line westbound removes a calendar date from your trip. A Friday 21:00 departure from Los Angeles, at 17 hours 50 minutes in the air, arrives in Singapore on Sunday morning. Saturday simply does not happen to you.
The return pays it back. Leaving Bali in the morning, you land in California on the same calendar date you departed. Treat the outbound day as unusable and the return day as recoverable, and the whole plan stops feeling like a gamble.
Here is how a ten-day trip from the West Coast lays out in practice:
- Friday night: depart Los Angeles or San Francisco.
- Sunday morning: land in Singapore, connect to Denpasar, sleep in Bali. Do not attempt Labuan Bajo the same day.
- Monday 06:55 or 07:20: fly to Labuan Bajo, board before 09:30, sail the same morning.
- Monday to Friday: four nights aboard.
- Friday: disembark, fly back to Bali, overnight or connect onward.
- Saturday: land home on the same calendar date you left Bali.

How many nights should you actually sail?
This is where North American itineraries usually go wrong, and the logic is not sentimental. Your transit is a fixed cost measured in hours. Your time aboard is the only variable you control.
Round-trip transit from the West Coast runs roughly 55 to 70 hours of elapsed travel. Two nights aboard is 48 hours. Book that and you spend more of the trip in seats than on teak, which is a poor trade for a journey of this length.
Four nights is 96 hours, and transit drops below half the experience. It is the shortest number we recommend to anyone crossing the Pacific, and it is the reason our North American bookings skew longer than our Singaporean ones.
Nights also buy geography, not just rest. Two nights covers the northern loop. The third night adds a sunrise anchorage and a second manta window, which matters because manta sightings are conditional and one attempt is not a plan. The fourth night opens the south of the park or, just as valuable, permits a day where nothing is scheduled.

Whole-boat charters in this market run USD 1,800 to USD 30,000 per night. Across 179 vessels we surveyed, only 61 publish a rate at all, and the median of those sits at USD 7,150 per night. One number North Americans should hold onto: your airfare does not change if you sail longer. The ticket costs the same for two nights as for five, so every additional night lowers the cost of the journey as a whole, measured per day of actual holiday.
Payment runs through Stripe and Airwallex, and we accept American Express alongside Visa and Mastercard, which matters more to US guests than to any other market we handle. What paperwork do US and Canadian passports need?
Both nationalities use Indonesia’s electronic visa on arrival. The official fee is IDR 500,000, roughly USD 35, valid for 30 days and extendable once for another 30. Your passport must have at least six months of validity from the arrival date.
Two smaller items catch people out. Indonesia requires an electronic customs declaration completed before you reach the immigration hall, and Bali charges a separate tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person if you spend time on the island, which almost every North American itinerary does.
For the park itself, the 2026 Komodo National Park ticket is IDR 650,000 per person, about USD 40, and it is dated. The date on the ticket must match the day you enter the park, which is one of several reasons we buy them against a confirmed sailing plan rather than in advance of one. When should you start the conversation?
Across 1,063 enquiries between November 2025 and August 2026, the median gap between first contact and departure was 74 days. North American guests frequently reverse the sensible order: they buy the long-haul ticket, then look for a boat.
Turn it around. There are thousands of seats on any given Pacific crossing and nine hulls in our owned fleet. Hold the vessel and the dates first, then buy the flight against a confirmed sailing window. It costs nothing to ask which boats are open in your month.
