For travellers flying from Europe, the strongest months for a Komodo charter are May, June, September and October: dry weather, water at 27-29 C, and calmer crossings than the July-August wind peak. July and August still sail well, but they are the windiest and most heavily booked weeks of the Komodo year.

We have run boats out of Labuan Bajo since 2015, and the pattern repeats every year. European guests plan around a school calendar written in Berlin, Lyon or Utrecht, then arrive in the one window when the Sape Strait is at its choppiest. That is a solvable problem, not a reason to cancel. It just changes which boat we put you on, which direction we sail first, and how early you need to hold the dates. Why do so many European guests end up in July and August?

Because that is when the continent stops. In 2026, the earliest German summer school holidays start on 29 June in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, and the latest end on 14 September in Bavaria. Mainland French school holidays begin Saturday 4 July 2026 and run to 31 August. The Dutch staggered summer break spans 6 July to 30 August, and the Belgian summer break covers 1 July to 31 August.

Italy is the outlier, and it is an advantage. Italian schools close between roughly 7 and 17 June depending on region, weeks before French or Dutch families are free, and South Tyrol runs its break to 6 September. Spanish and Swiss dates are set by autonomous community and by canton, so a Zurich family and a Geneva family can have different windows. Layer Italy’s 15 August public holiday on top and mid-August becomes the single densest fortnight in the Komodo calendar.

Our own enquiry data tracks that shape. Across a recent sample, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium together produced 343 enquirers, about 42% of inbound volume, and they cluster hard on the July-August school break.

What actually changes in the water between June and September?

July and August are the driest months of the year in Komodo, often with only 0-1 rain days, and they are also the windiest. Crossings between the northern and southern halves of the park get choppy, and boats leave earlier in the morning to beat the afternoon build. That trade-off is real: you buy near-guaranteed sunshine and you pay for it in motion.

Water temperature moves in the opposite direction to the air. Shoulder months sit around 27-28 C in April and May, 26-27 C in June, and 27-29 C in September and October. During the July-August upwelling the park cools to roughly 24-26 C, and southern sites such as Manta Alley can drop to 22-25 C with a sharp thermocline. Snorkellers notice it. Divers plan for it with a thicker suit.

Visibility follows a similar arc. Independent dive guides put April and October at roughly 20-30 m, July and August at 15-25 m with a colder green tint in the south, and the December-February monsoon months at 10-20 m. Manta activity is not seasonal in the sense of present or absent: the animals shift between the central channels in January and February and the southern sites in July and August.

How many days does the journey itself eat?

More than most European planners allow. Realistic door-to-door times run 16-26 hours via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, both of which now have scheduled international service into Labuan Bajo, 18-30 hours via Bali, and 19-31 hours via Jakarta. The Amsterdam-Jakarta nonstop is about 14 hours 50 minutes. Add the domestic leg: Bali to Labuan Bajo is 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes, Jakarta to Labuan Bajo is 2 hours 25 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes.

Then add the clock. Labuan Bajo runs on WITA, UTC+8. That is six hours ahead of Central European Summer Time in July and seven hours ahead of Central European Time in January. Eastbound travel compresses your day, which is the harder direction to absorb, and the rule of thumb of roughly one day of adjustment per time zone means a 6-7 hour shift is not gone by breakfast on day two.

Our standing advice has not changed in ten years: land in Labuan Bajo the day before embarkation. A single delayed domestic connection turns a four-night private whole-boat charter in Komodo into a three-night one, and no operator can give that night back to you.

How far ahead should Europeans book?

Across 1,063 enquiries logged between November 2025 and August 2026, the median lead time to departure was 74 days. That is a sensible number for April, May, September or October. It is not enough for July and August, when the strongest hulls in the park are held six to nine months out and the good dates disappear in the order they were asked for.

What if August is the only window you have?

Then we build the trip around the wind instead of pretending it is not there. Three things do the work.

• Hull first. Length and displacement matter more in a chop than any brochure adjective. Of the nine yachts we own and operate, Komodo Signature at 78.2 m and Komodo Prestige at 66 m are the two that shrug off an August crossing most convincingly. Ask any operator for length overall and where the guest cabins sit relative to the waterline before you ask about the wine list.
• Direction second. We sail the sheltered north early and hold the exposed southern sites for the settled mornings, rather than running a fixed loop and hoping.
• Timing third. Park access in 2026 is date-locked and passport-linked, with reported daily visitor limits around 1,000 across the park and timed entry sessions from early morning. The 05:00-08:00 session at Padar is the difference between a ridge you share with a dozen people and one you share with two hundred. We hold those slots as part of the charter, not as an upsell.

Is the green season ever the right call?

Sometimes, and we will tell you when it is not. January averages around 16 rain days and February can reach 20, with visibility down to 10-20 m and west-monsoon swell making northern crossings unreliable. What you get in exchange is an empty park, the strongest central manta activity of the year, and rates well below the August peak.

What should be in your hands before you fly?

Four items, and none of them take long. The Indonesian e-VOA costs IDR 500,000, roughly USD 33-35, is valid for 30 days, can be extended once, and can be applied for online at evisa.imigrasi.go.id before departure. The Komodo National Park ticket for 2026 is IDR 650,000, about USD 40, and it is dated: it is bought for a specific day, not as a flexible pass.
