Most Komodo season guides are written for travellers with three flexible weeks. Guests flying in from Singapore, Taipei, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur or Shanghai are working with something narrower: one fixed public holiday, one school term break, and a flight bank that only opens on certain days. So the useful question is not “when is Komodo good” — it is which good month your calendar can actually reach. This is how we sequence it from the operations desk in Labuan Bajo, and how it feeds into Komodo yacht charter rates across the year.
Why your flight, not the forecast, sets the shape of the trip
Scoot opened a nonstop between Singapore Changi and Komodo Airport on 21 December 2025. It flies Thursdays and Sundays as TR290 and TR292, and the sector takes about 3 hours 20 minutes. That is the only nonstop international service into Labuan Bajo we are aware of for 2026, and schedules on a young route move, so confirm the day pattern when you book.
Everyone else connects. From Taipei Taoyuan, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur or mainland China you route through Bali Denpasar or Jakarta first, then take the domestic leg into Labuan Bajo — 65 to 75 minutes in the air. Garuda Indonesia and several domestic carriers work it, and in our experience most of the workable departures leave Bali in the morning.
The practical consequence is a scheduling one. A Singapore guest who takes the Thursday nonstop and comes home Sunday gets three nights on the water and spends two working days. A Taipei or Hong Kong guest running the same charter should budget a night in Bali inbound, because a red-eye into Denpasar followed by a same-morning connection leaves no margin if anything slips — and the boat sails on the tide, not on your rebooking.
What the sea is actually doing, month by month
Komodo has two moods. The west monsoon runs roughly December to March and brings rain, chop and shorter sight lines. The dry run from April to October brings settled water, and June through September is the calmest stretch of the year. Underwater visibility follows the same curve: broadly 20 to 30 metres in the dry months against 10 to 20 metres at the peak of the monsoon.
Manta rays run on the opposite clock. They are in the park year-round, but encounter odds at Karang Makassar and Mawan climb from about October and stay high through March, when plankton-rich water draws them in. The calmest sailing months and the strongest manta months do not overlap. That single fact reshapes more itineraries than anything else we discuss with guests.

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on 6 February. Should you still sail?
Yes — but with the route chosen for you rather than by you. Chinese New Year 2027 lands on Saturday 6 February, squarely inside the west monsoon. That means westerly wind, rain squalls and a swell that makes the long open crossings uncomfortable rather than dangerous. A captain who tells you February is identical to July has not sailed it.
What changes is the anchorage plan, not the destination. Through January and February we run leeward, northern itineraries: sheltered water, shorter open legs, and snorkel and dive sites chosen for that week’s wind rather than a fixed brochure loop. Part of the Labuan Bajo fleet dry-docks for those two months. Because nine of our vessels are owned and operated in-house, we can tell you at enquiry which hulls are in service on your dates instead of you discovering it at the pier.
The trade is honest: you give up glassy water and receive the strongest manta odds of the year. Families who already sailed a July charter often return in February for exactly that reason. Where the Singapore June break lands — and why it closes first
Singapore’s Ministry of Education has set the 2027 mid-year school holidays from Saturday 29 May to Sunday 27 June. That month sits at the front of the calm run: settled seas, visibility climbing toward 30 metres, and effectively the whole of Singapore’s family travel market pointed at the same four weeks.
Our median booking lead time is 74 days, measured across 1,063 enquiries between November 2025 and August 2026. Median means half of our guests commit later than that. For a mid-June 2027 sailing, 74 days back is roughly the end of March — and by late March the larger hulls in that window are usually the ones already gone. If you need a specific vessel in a specific week, work backwards from the vessel, not from the date.
July and August: Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia summer
Taiwan and Hong Kong school summer holidays cover July and August, and Malaysian family travel concentrates in the same weeks. They arrive at the flattest water of the year, with dive visibility commonly in the 25 to 30 metre band. It is also when the Labuan Bajo fleet is at its fullest, which changes availability long before it changes anything else.
Two things matter for guests connecting through Bali in this window. First, Denpasar is at peak load, so build a real buffer into the domestic leg rather than the legal minimum connection. Second, a whole-boat charter is quoted per night for the vessel, not per person — filling a six-cabin yacht with two families changes your per-head figure without changing the charter price. That arithmetic is why groups from Taipei and Hong Kong frequently move from booked cabins to a private yacht charter in Komodo once they count heads properly.
The window most guests from Asia overlook
September and October. Singapore’s 2027 September break runs 4 to 12 September; in 2026 it ran 5 to 13 September. The seas are still inside the calm run, visibility holds around 20 to 30 metres, and October is regularly the month with the lightest winds of the whole year. Mantas also begin returning from about October, so late in that window you get settled water and rising manta odds in the same trip.
Fleet pressure drops noticeably after the second week of September. For couples, photographers and anyone travelling without school-term constraints, this is the part of the calendar we point to first — and it is the easiest window in which to hold one specific traditional luxury phinisi in Komodo for one specific week rather than taking whatever is left.
How many days do you actually need?
Three days and two nights is the standard short format out of Labuan Bajo. It covers Padar, Komodo or Rinca, Pink Beach and one manta site. Four days and three nights adds the northern or eastern sites and removes the rush between anchorages. Below three nights, sailing time starts eating the itinerary rather than serving it.
Counted in leave days: a Singapore guest on the Thursday-out, Sunday-back pattern spends two working days. From Taipei, Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur, add a Bali night in each direction and the same charter costs four to five working days. Guests who want Labuan Bajo without the overnight commitment often begin with a single full-day Labuan Bajo yacht rental and return later for the longer sailing.
What the calendar changes about cost — and what it does not
Whole-boat charters in Komodo run from USD 1,800 to USD 30,000 per night depending on the vessel. Across a survey of 179 boats operating in the park, the 61 carrying published rates showed a median of USD 7,150 per night. That spread is driven by the yacht — length, cabin count, crew ratio, tender and dive setup — far more than by the month you happen to sail.
The park ticket, by contrast, is a fixed and dated cost. Komodo National Park entry for 2026 is IDR 650,000 per person, roughly USD 40, and the ticket is tied to a specific calendar date. Dated tickets are why we push for firm dates early instead of “sometime in June”: the paperwork follows the calendar, not the enquiry thread.

Using the 74-day median as a marker rather than a promise:
- Chinese New Year 2027, 6 February: firm dates by late November 2026.
- Singapore June break, 29 May to 27 June 2027: firm dates by mid-March 2027.
- July and August peak: earlier than any other window — the large hulls move first.
- September and October: 74 days is genuinely sufficient here.
- Year-end, from 20 November 2027 in Singapore: confirm the vessel before the flights.
