Komodo Island Tour FAQs

Got questions? We have answers! Below are some frequently asked questions about traveling to Komodo National Park and our tours.

Reaching Komodo Island from Bali is easier than most people think. The fastest way is to fly from Bali (Denpasar) to Labuan Bajo (airport code: LBJ) on Flores Island. Labuan Bajo is the gateway town to Komodo National Park, and where all our tours depart. Multiple airlines (Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Lion Air, Citilink, Super Air Jet, etc.) operate daily flights on this route. The flight is short – about 1 hour 15 minutes on average. For example, a typical morning flight might leave Bali around 7:00 AM and land in Labuan Bajo by 8:15 AM. Once you arrive, our team can pick you up at the airport and transfer you to the harbor (only 10-15 minutes from LBJ airport) to begin your tour.

If you're doing a Bali to Komodo Island tour as a day trip, you'd take the first flight out and the last flight back the same day (doable on paper, but a long day!). Many travelers opt to arrive in Labuan Bajo one day before their tour and stay overnight, to ensure a relaxed start. Labuan Bajo has a range of hotels from budget to luxury if you plan to stay.

There is no direct ferry from Bali to Komodo for tour purposes (there are multi-day local ferries that are very slow and not practical for most tourists). Some liveaboard cruise companies offer extended voyages sailing from Bali to Komodo by yacht, but those are usually 1-2 week trips. The most common and convenient route is definitely flying into Labuan Bajo.

In summary: Book a flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo, then join our Komodo tour from Labuan Bajo. We'll handle everything from Labuan Bajo onward. If you need help booking flights or advice on timing, just ask – we're happy to assist to ensure your Komodo Island tour from Bali is seamless.

Our Komodo tour packages are typically very comprehensive. Inclusions generally cover: boat charter, fuel, crew, an English-speaking guide, all meals and drinks (water, tea, coffee) during the tour, snorkeling equipment, and accommodations on board (for overnight tours). For example, on a 3D2N liveaboard, you'll have 3 lunches, 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts provided fresh by our onboard chef (plus snacks, fruits, and beverages in between). Day tours include lunch and sometimes breakfast depending on timing. We also provide hotel transfers in Labuan Bajo – so picking you up before the tour and dropping off after is included, as long as you're staying in the Labuan Bajo area.

Things not included are usually: national park entrance fees, personal insurance, airfare to Labuan Bajo, hotel stays before/after the tour, and personal expenses or special requests. Alcoholic drinks and soft drinks may be available for purchase on some boats (or we can arrange to stock them for you at cost if you're on a private tour – just let us know your preferences in advance). Dive equipment/rental is not included unless specified in a diving package.

We pride ourselves on running all-inclusive Komodo tour packages so you don't have to worry about the logistics. For instance, if you charter a private tour with us, we take care of the cruise permit, port clearance, ranger fees for your guide, and so on – those administrative things are behind the scenes and included. Essentially, from the moment your tour starts till it ends, you shouldn't have to open your wallet except for souvenir shopping or tipping the crew if you wish.

When you book, we will send you a rundown of "What's Included & Excluded" for full clarity. But as a quick recap: included = transport (boat), food, guide, activities/gear; excluded = park fee, travel to Labuan Bajo, and extras like drinks or dive add-ons. If anything is unclear, please ask. We want you to feel comfortable knowing exactly what you're getting.

Yes, you can! A Komodo Island day tour is a popular option and allows you to see the main highlights in just one day. As outlined above, our day trip typically covers Padar Island, Komodo Island (or Rinca) for dragons, Pink Beach, and Manta Point, all in a single day by speedboat. It's an early start (around 6 AM) and you'll be back by late afternoon. It's quite a full schedule, but absolutely feasible if you're in good shape for hiking and swimming. Many travelers even do it as a day tour from Bali – catching the first flight to Labuan Bajo, hopping on our speedboat tour, and flying back in the evening. If you plan to do that, make sure to coordinate flight times carefully (and we recommend travel insurance just in case of any flight delays). We've successfully hosted many Bali day-trippers.

However, if you ask us (as Komodo experts), we'd say if you have the time, spend at least 2 or 3 days. The park is vast and best enjoyed at a slightly slower pace. A multi-day tour lets you experience sunrise and sunset in the park, do more snorkeling (day tours have to skip some amazing spots due to time constraints), and truly soak in the atmosphere without rushing. It's possible to "see Komodo in a day," but you will be on the move constantly. Meanwhile, spending a night or two on a boat allows for a more relaxed itinerary – plus the chance to sleep under the stars and enjoy the bioluminescent waters at night, which are magical experiences on their own.

If one day is all you have, don't worry – we'll make it incredible and worthwhile. Just be ready for a big day of adventure. If you can spare more days, we highly encourage doing so, as two or three days Komodo tours are the most popular choice for a reason: you simply get to see and do more, and Komodo is the kind of place you won't regret having extra time in!

Absolutely – safety is our top priority on all Komodo tours. We understand that encountering wild Komodo dragons (which can be dangerous if provoked) and being out at sea can raise safety questions, so we take many precautions:

  • Experienced Guides and Rangers: As required by the park, all visitors must be accompanied by authorized guides/rangers when visiting the islands with Komodo dragons. Our tour guide will be with you, and on Komodo and Rinca, official park rangers join every trek (usually one ranger per group of 5-6 guests). These rangers carry a forked safety stick and are experts in dragon behavior. They will brief you on keeping a safe distance (at least 5 meters from a dragon), not making sudden movements, etc. There have been very few incidents over the years, and none with guided groups that follow instructions. We have a 100% safety record with wildlife encounters. If you listen to your guide and ranger, seeing the dragons is very safe.
  • Boat Safety: Our boats are maintained to high standards. Before each departure, we do engine and equipment checks. Every boat has life jackets for all passengers (which we'll point out during the safety briefing), navigation lights, marine radio/communication devices, and first aid kits. The captains are seasoned sailors in Komodo's waters, which can have strong currents – they know where and when to go or avoid. On speedboats, we provide life vests to wear during high-speed transits. For liveaboards, safety rails and non-slip mats are in place where needed. We typically do not sail at night (except short transits) to ensure safe anchoring when it's dark.
  • Weather and Sea Conditions: We constantly monitor weather forecasts and sea conditions. If at any point conditions become unsafe (for example, sudden storm or unusually high waves in a certain area), the itinerary will be adjusted. For instance, if the southern sites are too choppy, we'll stick to northern Komodo sites that day. In the rare event of extreme weather, we might delay or cancel a trip with a full refund/reschedule – but this is very uncommon outside of the January-Feb monsoon peak. We avoid sailing in the worst of the rainy season for this reason.
  • Snorkeling/Diving Safety: Our guides are also trained in water rescue and always carry flotation devices (like a lifebuoy or flotation noodle) when guiding snorkelers. We give snorkelers a briefing on currents and what to do if you're tired. Life jackets can be worn for additional buoyancy while snorkeling if desired. For divers, only licensed dive masters/instructors will lead scuba activities, following standard PADI safety protocols. We also discourage any risky behavior like climbing rocks, cliff jumping, etc., unless it's a known safe spot and conditions allow.
  • Health Precautions: We carry basic first aid, and some crew are first-aid certified. The common issues might be minor cuts, scrapes, or sea sickness, which we can handle on board. If someone has a more serious medical condition, Labuan Bajo has a clinic and hospital available once we return to port. It's wise to bring any personal medications you need, and to have travel insurance that covers adventure activities. We provide plenty of drinking water to keep you hydrated in the hot climate, and our meals are prepared hygienically with bottled water for washing and cooking.

In summary, touring Komodo is very safe when done with a professional operator like us. We've taken families with young kids, senior citizens, and all sorts of travelers successfully to Komodo. Follow the guidance of the crew and rangers, use common sense (e.g., don't wander off alone on the islands or in the dark), and you will be just fine. We will brief you on safety do's and don'ts at the start of the trip and before key activities. Your adventure should be thrilling but also safe and worry-free – and we work hard to ensure that.

The best time to visit Komodo largely depends on what you want to see and your weather preference, but generally the dry season (April to early October) is ideal. Here's a breakdown:

  • April – June: Excellent time. The islands are coming out of the rainy season, so everything is green and lush. Water is clear and usually calm – great for snorkeling/diving. Tourist numbers are moderate. This is one of our favorite periods because you get the vibrant green landscapes plus good weather.
  • July – August: Peak season. This is when most tourists come (summer holidays). Weather is very dry, sunny, and consistently clear – optimal conditions for sailing and diving (warm waters, good visibility). The island scenery starts to turn golden-brown as the grass dries, giving that "Jurassic Park" look Komodo is famous for. It's considered one of the best times to visit Komodo in terms of weather and wildlife activity – however, do expect more crowds at popular spots and boats can be fully booked well in advance. If you plan a trip in summer, secure your booking early.
  • September – early November: Shoulder season and highly recommended. The weather remains mostly dry and warm, the sea is still calm, and there are far fewer tourists than in July/August. September can be quite hot as the islands are very dry by then (bring sun protection), but the marine life is fantastic – this is often when we see the most manta rays as they congregate in certain bays. Early November is also good, though by mid-November occasional rains might begin.
  • Late November – March: This is the wet season in Komodo (monsoon period). It doesn't rain every day, but you can expect periodic rain showers and occasionally rougher seas, especially in January and February which are the peak of monsoon. Many liveaboard tours take a break during January-March for annual maintenance, etc., because of the weather. That said, day tours and short trips still run most of this time. The plus side is that it's off-peak: you'll have very few other tourists, and the islands turn green again starting in February. If you don't mind potential itinerary flexibility (we might have to skip a spot if the sea is too rough) and some rain, you can still enjoy Komodo in the wet season. Just note it will be hot and humid, and some days very cloudy.

In summary, April-June and Sept-Oct are probably the sweet spots balancing good weather and fewer crowds. July-August is best for guaranteed sunshine but busiest. We generally avoid late Dec through early March for multi-day trips due to weather, but we can advise based on up-to-date forecasts if you're considering those months.

Also worth noting: If you're keen on a specific wildlife event, for example, manta ray season is typically year-round but they peak in numbers around Sept-Nov. Komodo dragon mating season is July-August (you might see fewer dragons then as they roam for mates) and nesting season is September (when females guard their nests – interesting behavior to witness). None of these will make or break your trip, but slight variations in experience can happen across seasons.

Whenever you choose to go, Komodo will offer something incredible. We operate tours year-round and will ensure you get the best possible experience in any given month.
