Turtle City
Siaba Island is widely nicknamed “Turtle City” for its consistently high population of green and hawksbill turtles resting and feeding on a shallow coral garden. The site is characterised by gentle currents and is recognised as one of the most beginner-friendly dive and snorkel sites in Komodo National Park. The reef features on most Komodo liveaboard routes out of Labuan Bajo and can be enjoyed year-round thanks to its sheltered position. For guests joining a curated Komodo yacht charter, Siaba Island is often featured as a relaxed marine stop within a carefully designed island-hopping route, ensuring optimal conditions for snorkeling or diving while maintaining a balanced pace between Komodo’s more dynamic sites.
Siaba Island refers to two small islands in the central area of Komodo National Park, namely Siaba Besar and Siaba Kecil in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The primary snorkeling and diving site is located in the sheltered northwest bay of Siaba Besar, known for its shallow coral garden and frequent green turtle encounters, which give it the nickname “Turtle City.” Siaba Besar is characterised by calm, beginner-friendly conditions, while Siaba Kecil offers a more advanced diving environment with stronger currents and richer macro life. Together, both islands form part of Komodo National Park’s recognised marine tourism zones, each serving different roles within central Komodo diving and cruising routes.
Siaba Island is located in the central-northern part of Komodo National Park, within the Flores Sea in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The main snorkeling and diving area lies in the sheltered northwest bay of Siaba Besar, which is typically reached from Labuan Bajo by Komodo liveaboard or private yacht in around 2–4 hours, depending on sea conditions. In the context of Komodo itineraries, Siaba Besar sits within the central Komodo route alongside well-known sites such as Batu Bolong, Tatawa, and Manta Point. Its location within Komodo National Park also means all visits operate under regulated marine conservation zones and standard park entry requirements.
Siaba Island is visited as part of central Komodo yacht charter itineraries with Komodo Luxury, typically included in multi-site sailing days alongside locations such as Batu Bolong, Tatawa Besar, Mauan, or Taka Makassar. On most routes, Siaba Besar is scheduled as a morning stop for snorkelling or diving before continuing to more current-exposed sites later in the day. Access is via a private yacht anchored in the northwest bay, with guests entering the water by tender or directly from the vessel, while all safety briefings and park coordination are managed by the onboard crew.

The residents of Turtle City are green turtles, Chelonia mydas — the only sea turtle that grazes a mostly plant diet as an adult, which chains them to seagrass meadows like Siaba’s. An adult can hold its breath for long stretches while resting, which is why you will see turtles parked motionless on the bottom between breaths: they are not stuck, they are napping. Green turtles are protected in Indonesian waters, and the etiquette in our briefings — side approaches, clear surface lanes, no touching — is what keeps a wild meadow behaving naturally with swimmers in it.
Siaba’s shelter is why it appears on so many of our overnight itineraries: the boat barely swings, dinner goes on deck, and the meadow is yours at first light before any day boat clears the harbor — usually the glassiest, most turtle-dense swim of the entire trip. Squid and baitfish gather under the anchor lights after dark, an unadvertised second aquarium off the swim platform. On route, Siaba usually takes the calm-evening slot after a Manta Point drift.

Siaba Besar is nicknamed “turtle city” for good reason, and its bay is mellow enough for beginners — it often precedes the slack-tide window at Batu Bolong.
