The short answer: there are two real ways to get from Lombok to Komodo. You can sail a multi-day boat crossing (usually sold as 4D3N), or you can fly via Bali and start your Komodo trip in Labuan Bajo. We have operated both, and for most travellers we now recommend the flight without hesitation: the crossing spends around two of its three nights on open water outside Komodo National Park, while the fly-and-sail route puts you inside the park thirty minutes after your boat leaves the harbour.

We have run this crossing. Here is what a season taught us
Between December 2025 and May 2026 we issued 54 dedicated crossing itineraries between Lombok and Labuan Bajo, so this recommendation does not come from an operator who cannot sell you the alternative. It comes from the trip logs. Three things stood out:
1. The sea time is real. The route crosses the Alas Strait, runs the long north coast of Sumbawa, and finishes through the Sape Strait. That is roughly two full days and two nights on open water, on a stretch where wind and swell change quickly and where a captain will, rightly, slow down or shelter when the weather turns. Guests who imagined a gentle island hop were often surprised by how much of the trip is simply transit.
2. The park gets the leftovers. On a typical 4D3N crossing, Komodo National Park itself receives about one day. Padar at sunrise, the dragons, Pink Beach, Manta Point: all of it compressed, and all of it dependent on arriving on schedule after two weather-exposed days.
3. Weather decides everything. From roughly December to March the west monsoon makes this stretch the windiest of the year, which is why so few boats offer it at all in those months, ours included. This is the honest reason you will find limited Lombok departures: we keep our fleet based in Labuan Bajo for safety, comfort and the best guest experience.

The route most of our guests take now
From Lombok, fly to Bali first: a 30 to 40 minute hop with many departures a day. From Bali, the flight to Labuan Bajo (Komodo Airport) takes 1 hour 20 minutes. Leave Lombok in the morning and you can be standing on the deck of your boat the same afternoon, with the national park thirty minutes away.
Both ends of that journey are handled by our own teams. When the crossing still makes sense
We would rather be a fair guide than a hard seller. A Lombok crossing can still be the right call if all of these are true: you are travelling between April and October, your dates are flexible enough to wait out weather, you genuinely enjoy long sea days more than time at anchor, and you are chartering privately rather than counting on a shared departure. Is there a direct boat or ferry from Lombok to Komodo?
There is no quick direct boat. What is sold online as “Lombok to Komodo” is a multi-day liveaboard crossing, typically 4 days and 3 nights, with around two of those nights on open sea. A public ferry route exists via Sumbawa but takes 24 to 36 hours with overland connections.
Why do most travellers end up starting from Labuan Bajo instead of sailing from Lombok?
Two reasons we see every week on our own desk. First, boats on the crossing are limited because the route is weather-exposed, so dates rarely line up. Second, the value equation: the crossing spends two nights on open water for about one day in the park, while starting from Labuan Bajo gives you the park from the first half hour. Comfort, safety and time all point the same way, which is why our fleet is based in Labuan Bajo.
Is the Lombok to Komodo boat trip safe?
With a good operator and in the right season, yes, but it is real open-sea sailing: the Alas Strait and the north Sumbawa coast are exposed, conditions change quickly, and seasickness is common on smaller boats. From December to March the west monsoon makes the stretch rough enough that most operators, including us, do not run it.
How long does it take to get from Lombok to Labuan Bajo?
By air: about half a day, flying Lombok to Bali (30–40 minutes) and Bali to Labuan Bajo (1 hour 20 minutes). By sea: 3 to 4 days. By public ferry and road via Sumbawa: 24 to 36 hours.
Is there a direct flight from Lombok to Labuan Bajo?
Direct flights appear seasonally but are not dependable year-round. The reliable pattern is via Bali, with many daily connections on both legs. Morning departures from Lombok comfortably reach Labuan Bajo by early afternoon.
I am on Gili Trawangan or Gili Air. What is the best way to Komodo?
Take the public boat back to Lombok, fly to Bali and connect to Labuan Bajo. Leaving the Gilis on a morning boat, you can be in Labuan Bajo the same evening and on a Komodo boat the next morning.
What does the trip cost compared to the crossing?
The flights via Bali are usually a minor part of a Komodo budget, and they replace two paid days at sea. Can I still see Moyo Island and Satonda?
Only on the multi-day crossing; they are Sumbawa-coast stopovers, not part of Komodo National Park. They are lovely, but they are also the reason the crossing spends so long in transit. If your goal is Komodo itself (the dragons, Padar, Pink Beach, Manta Point), starting from Labuan Bajo gives you all of it with none of the open-sea days.
What is the best month for this trip?
From Labuan Bajo the park sails year-round, with April to November the driest stretch. The Lombok crossing is realistically an April-to-October route only; December to March is the windiest period on that open stretch and departures largely stop.
