Megalania: The Giant Cousin That Didn’t Make It
Australia’s Pleistocene savannas were ruled by Varanus priscus — Megalania — a monitor estimated at 5+ metres, the largest terrestrial lizard known to science. Komodo dragons belong to the same giant-monitor lineage: not descendants of Megalania, but close kin within one Australian radiation of huge varanids. When Australia’s megafauna collapsed in the late Pleistocene, Megalania went with it. Why Did They Survive Only in Indonesia?
The consensus explanation is isolation plus extinction elsewhere. During Pleistocene glacials, sea levels dropped by more than a hundred metres, narrowing the straits of Wallacea enough for a strong-swimming monitor to island-hop westward along the volcanic chain. Crucially, Wallacea’s deep channels never closed completely — which kept Asian big cats, wild dogs, and other mainland carnivores out. When seas rose again, populations on Flores and its satellites were cut off — and cut off, too, from the catastrophes that later swept the mainland. On their dry savanna islands the dragons kept what mattered: abundant deer and pig prey, no competing large carnivores, and no human hunting pressure heavy enough to erase them. Populations remain dynamic on the margins — the dragons of Padar Island went extinct in the twentieth century after prey collapsed, and the species is now listed as Endangered. 1910–1912: The West Finally Meets the Dragon
Rumours of a “land crocodile” (buaya darat) in the Lesser Sundas reached Dutch colonial officials for years before Lieutenant van Steyn van Hensbroek sailed to Komodo in 1910, secured a specimen, and sent skin and photographs to Pieter Antonie Ouwens, director of the zoological museum at Buitenzorg (today’s Bogor). Ouwens published the formal description in 1912, naming Varanus komodoensis — and within three years the colonial government had protected it, an unusually fast conservation response for the era. The expeditions that followed through the 1910s and 1920s carried the dragon into Western museums, zoos, and eventually cinema — but they were catching up to knowledge the islands already held. The people of Komodo, of course, had known the ora all along — and told a far older story about it, preserved in the Ora legend.
