What Islands Do Komodo Dragons Live On?
Wild Komodo dragons live on just a handful of islands on Earth — all in Indonesia. The strongholds are Komodo Island and Rinca Island inside Komodo National Park, with small, isolated groups on Gili Motang and Nusa Kode, and scattered coastal populations on western Flores. Nowhere else on the planet holds a wild population.
The most recent park data puts the population at roughly 3,270 dragons (2024) — fewer than 3,500 worldwide. Komodo and Rinca carry the vast majority between them, which is why ranger-guided treks on those two islands are the reliable way to see dragons; the Gili Motang and Nusa Kode groups are small, fragile and off the visitor trail.
Why only here? Deep straits along the Wallace Line isolated the Lesser Sunda Islands millions of years ago, the tropical savanna suits a large ambush reptile perfectly, and East Nusa Tenggara has few competing large predators — so the dragon sits unchallenged at the top of the food chain, hunting Timor deer and wild boar.
