Families rarely come unstuck in Komodo because they picked the wrong boat. They come unstuck because they bought one schedule for three different bodies. A grandmother with a replaced knee, a father who wants to dive Batu Bolong and a nine-year-old who would stay in the water until dark cannot share a fixed programme. What actually goes wrong when three generations share one boat?
Three things, and none of them are about luxury.
The forced march. On a shared departure the tender leaves at 05:15 for Padar and returns when the last passenger is down. Anyone who cannot climb sits in a skiff in the sun for ninety minutes. On a private charter the tender simply runs twice.
The noon gap. Children peak early and fade at midday; grandparents do the reverse. One fixed schedule serves neither. A private boat puts the swim stop at 09:00 and the island walk at 16:00, once the heat has gone.
Medical distance. From the middle of the park you are hours of sailing from town, which changes what “a bit unwell” means for a 78-year-old. That is a planning input, not a reason to stay home.
Why does the whole-boat decision matter more with grandparents aboard?
Because on a shared cruise the schedule belongs to the majority, and your parents are not the majority. Whole-boat pricing in Komodo runs USD 1,800 to 30,000 per vessel per night. Across 179 vessels we surveyed, the 61 with published rates sat at a median of USD 7,150 per night. That is per boat, not per person — which is why it suits nine or twelve related people who would otherwise pay per head for a schedule they cannot all follow.

The shape of a three-generation itinerary follows from that table: build the days around Rinca, Siaba Besar, Pink Beach and Kalong, then treat Padar and Manta Point as optional forks rather than fixed stops.
How hard is the Padar climb really?
Harder than the photographs suggest. Published counts for the main viewpoint range from 800 to 838 steps, with elevation gain reported anywhere between 170 and 250 metres — the route has been rebuilt in sections, which is why no two guides agree. A steady walker reaches the top in 30 to 45 minutes.
What most families miss is that you do not have to reach the summit. Viewing platforms appear well before the top, and the deck many visitors stop at around the 500th to 700th step already frames the three bays that made the island famous. For a grandparent who wants the photograph without the last twenty minutes of stairs, that platform is the trip.
Rinca or Komodo Island: which dragon site suits older parents?
Rinca, in almost every case. The Loh Buaya visitor area was rebuilt with an elevated walkway that keeps guests above ground level and largely removes steps from the route. Komodo Island’s Loh Liang trail still climbs roughly 200 metres over about 700 metres of ground to reach its viewpoint.
Both islands require a ranger. That is standard park practice rather than an upsell, and the ranger judges on the day whether a route suits the people in front of them. No park-wide minimum age is published for the treks, so the practical rule is short: children stay within arm’s reach of an adult, nobody runs, and the ranger’s instruction ends every discussion.
Can the children actually snorkel with manta rays?
Sometimes, and it depends on the day rather than the child’s age. Mantas are present at Karang Makassar year-round and their cleaning stations sit roughly 5 to 8 metres down, with animals often rising near the surface. The complication is current: it runs moderate to hard depending on tide and moon phase, at an open-water site with no beach to swim back to.
Our crews make that call at the mooring, not in the brochure. When the drift is running, children and nervous swimmers watch from the tender while confident snorkellers go in with a guide and a float. When it is slack, everyone goes.
Siaba Besar quietly does the job Manta Point gets credit for. It is shallow, calm and reliably full of green turtles, and it is where most children in our care meet their first large wild animal underwater. Who should sleep where on a family charter?
Three rules earn their keep. Put grandparents in a midship cabin on the lowest guest deck, where the boat moves least on the overnight repositioning legs. Put children adjacent to their parents, never across a deck and a staircase. Keep one cabin clear as a wet room if the layout allows it.
Vessel class then decides more than the deck plan does. A traditional luxury phinisi gives you enormous shaded deck area, which is where a mixed-age group actually lives all day; a modern motor yacht gives you speed between sites and stronger air conditioning. What happens if someone gets ill inside the park?
Labuan Bajo has one hospital: Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, on (0385) 2381900. It is the only facility in West Manggarai with a hyperbaric chamber, which matters if anyone in the group dives. Cases needing intensive care or surgery are stabilised there and flown onward, usually to Bali.
Three preparations do most of the work. Carry every prescription in its original packaging with a doctor’s letter, because replacing cardiac or diabetes medication in Flores is slow. Buy insurance that names medical evacuation, and read the upper age limit in the policy wording rather than the marketing page — many standard policies change terms above 70. And tell us about mobility limits, allergies and conditions at enquiry, not at the harbour: it changes which boat we put you on and where we anchor at night.
When should three generations sail — and when should you book?
Sea state decides this, not air temperature. April to June and September to November deliver the calmest crossings and the best underwater visibility. January to March is the roughest and wettest window; June to August is dry but carries the season’s strongest wind and current.
That produces one uncomfortable fact for Australian families. The long summer break runs 18 December 2026 to 3 February 2027 in New South Wales, from 12 December in Queensland and South Australia and 19 December in Victoria — landing squarely in the roughest part of the Komodo year. September is the better trade: 19 September to 4 October 2026 in Victoria, 28 September to 9 October in New South Wales, inside the calmest sailing window. Our booking data shows a median lead time of 74 days across 1,063 bookings from November 2025 to August 2026. Three-generation groups should ignore that number. Nine to twelve people need aligned flights, adjoining cabins and one particular vessel; six to nine months out is realistic, and boats with genuine family layouts go first for September and Easter.
What has to be arranged before everyone flies?
- Visa on arrival — for Australian, British, Belgian, Dutch and US passports: 30 days, single entry, one 30-day extension. Every child needs their own visa.
- Passport validity — at least six months from arrival, checked per passport, infants included.
- Arrival card — the electronic All Indonesia arrival declaration, completed before landing, free of charge.
