Compare Komodo phinisi vessels on six things: who actually owns the boat, hull volume rather than advertised metres, the cabin mix on the deck plan, generator and fresh-water capacity, the named safety and navigation gear, and the sailing paperwork. Class labels like VIP and VVIP are written by each operator, not by any regulator.
Most Komodo comparison guides stop at length and price. After eleven seasons dispatching charters out of Labuan Bajo, we can tell you those two numbers predict the least about how a trip actually goes. What follows is the sequence we use internally when a guest sends us three boat names and asks which one to take — the same sequence you can apply to our luxury phinisi charter fleet in Komodo or to any other operator’s listing.
Who actually owns the boat you are booking?
This is the first filter, and everything downstream depends on it: who repairs a failed air-conditioning compressor at 2 a.m., who re-crews a vessel mid-season, who absorbs the cost when the itinerary has to change.
Komodo Luxury has operated from Labuan Bajo since 2015 as PT Komodo Bahari Nusantara. We run two clearly separate relationships with vessels. Nine phinisi are owned and operated by us — Komodo Signature, Komodo Prestige, Naturalia, Ayvara, Malca Voyages, Catnazse, Pinta, Mosalaki and Neptune Cruise. On those, crew, maintenance and service are ours year-round; you book with the operator, never a middleman. Alongside them we dispatch more than 200 vetted partner yachts, including Vinca Voyages, Cordelia and Marea. On a partner vessel the owner controls day-to-day standards, and our job is to inspect before dispatch, brief the crew on your itinerary and stand behind the booking.
Both models work. The failure mode is the operator who blurs the line, so ask one direct question: is this vessel owned by you, or dispatched on your behalf? A company that owns a boat can tell you the yard it was built in, the engine model and the last slipway date without checking. We publish ownership status on every listing, and the vessels we own and operate sit on their own page rather than being folded into one undifferentiated directory.
Why hull volume beats advertised metres
Length is the easiest number to market and the weakest one to compare. Gross tonnage (GT) measures internal volume, not weight, and it is what appears on an Indonesian vessel registration. Two phinisi of the same length can differ enormously once beam and deck count are included.
Take two boats in our own fleet. Malca Voyages measures 30 m by 5.1 m. Mosalaki is 28 m long — two metres shorter — but 7 m in the beam, almost two metres wider. The wider hull gives more usable saloon and sundeck area per guest and a slower, calmer roll at anchor. Pinta Phinisi, also 30 m, is registered at GT 83 with a 6 m beam. Same headline length, three different boats.
Ask for the registered GT and the beam, not just the length. If an operator cannot produce them, that tells you something on its own.
What the deck plan tells you that “8 cabins” does not
Cabin count is a container, not a description. A phinisi advertised with eight cabins may sleep 16 in matched doubles or 24 once extra beds and bunk rooms are counted. Naturalia carries 8 cabins across three decks and is rated for up to 24 guests. Catnazse also has 8 cabins but is rated for 18. Ayvara has 7 cabins and caps at 15.
Maximum capacity and comfortable capacity are different numbers. On a five-night itinerary, a boat rated for 24 is a genuinely different experience with 14 aboard. Ask for the cabin-by-cabin breakdown: how many master or suite cabins, how many deluxe, how many superior, how many bunk or convertible rooms, which decks they sit on, and which have windows rather than portholes. On Malca Voyages, for example, the mix runs one master ocean-view for four, one deluxe, one superior and a quad room with double bunks — useful for a family, less so for four couples.
Owned and partner phinisi compared
| Vessel | Status | Dimensions | Cabins | Max guests | From (whole boat, per night) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Komodo Signature | Owned & operated | 78.2 m × 13.8 m | 10 | 20 | USD 30,000 |
| Komodo Prestige | Owned & operated | 66 m × 13.8 m | 8 | 16 | USD 25,000 |
| Neptune Cruise | Owned & operated | 40 m × 8 m | 7 | 20 | USD 8,900 |
| Naturalia | Owned & operated | 33.45 m × 6 m | 8 | 24 | USD 7,800 |
| Mosalaki | Owned & operated | 28 m × 7 m | 5 | 12 | USD 6,400 |
| Catnazse | Owned & operated | 34.4 m × 6.3 m | 8 | 18 | USD 5,900 |
| Ayvara | Owned & operated | 25 m × 5.6 m | 7 | 15 | USD 5,500 |
| Malca Voyages | Owned & operated | 30 m × 5.1 m | 7 | 21 | USD 5,300 |
| Pinta | Owned & operated | 30 m × 6 m (GT 83) | 5 | 13 | USD 4,750 |
| Vinca Voyages | Vetted partner | 31 m × 5.5 m | 6 | 14–18 | USD 6,500 |
| Cordelia | Vetted partner | 33 m × 6.2 m | 5 | 14 | USD 5,350 |
| Marea | Vetted partner | 36 m × 7 m | 8 | 17 | USD 4,950 |
Read that table sideways and the point becomes obvious: length does not set price. Marea, a 36 m partner phinisi with eight cabins, opens lower than Neptune Cruise at 40 m, and lower than Mosalaki at 28 m. What moves the number is cabin quality, generator capacity, crew depth and how recently the interior was rebuilt.
Power, water and range: the three numbers that decide comfort
Air conditioning in Komodo runs off generators, and generators are where budget boats economise. Ask for the generator configuration in kVA and whether there is a second unit. Naturalia runs a 31.3 kVA main generator with a 31.3 kVA backup of identical size — genuine redundancy, not a token standby. Pinta and Mosalaki each carry 30 kVA plus 15 kVA. Ayvara runs 20 kVA plus 20 kVA.
Fresh water is the second number. There is no marina refill mid-park, so tank capacity sets how freely you can shower on a four- or five-night run. Neptune Cruise carries 10,000 litres, Naturalia and Catnazse 8,000 litres, Ayvara and Malca Voyages 6,000 litres, Pinta 5,000 litres. Divide by guests and nights before you assume it is enough.
Cruising speed decides how much of your holiday is spent under way. Malca Voyages runs 15–16 knots on a Mitsubishi 8DC11; Naturalia cruises at 7–9 knots. On the long southern legs toward Manta Point that difference is measured in hours, not minutes. It matters most on short itineraries; on multi-night Komodo liveaboard itineraries a slower, heavier hull is often the more comfortable trade.
Which safety and navigation gear should be named, not implied
“Full safety equipment” is not an answer. Ask for the inventory by name. Naturalia’s navigation list includes AIS, SSB, compass and an EPIRB. Catnazse carries a Garmin 585plus with a Samyung AIS unit. Mosalaki lists compass, GPS, AIS and radio, with a life raft rated for 12 — matching its 12-guest maximum, which is the check that actually matters.
Every charter we dispatch, owned or partner, is checked against a written 12-point vessel quality standard covering inspection date, engine service record, generator redundancy, cleanliness, linen, crew roster, life jackets for full capacity, life-raft certificate validity, fire suppression, air conditioning, plumbing, and food hygiene with a written emergency plan. The same checklist is applied to our own nine boats. A vessel that fails a point is not dispatched until it is fixed.
What paperwork proves the boat can legally sail this week?
Indonesian passenger vessels require a safety certificate, and Law No. 6 of 2023 (Article 126) sets out the passenger-ship safety certificate among the certificate types issued to compliant vessels. Departures from Labuan Bajo also need a Surat Persetujuan Berlayar (sailing approval) from KSOP Kelas III Labuan Bajo, the harbourmaster and port authority office.
This is not a formality. KSOP closed tourist sailings to Padar and Komodo islands for three days from 22 to 24 July 2026 on weather grounds, and again for three days from 6 to 8 August 2026. Any operator running Komodo in 2026 has dealt with a withheld sailing approval. The useful question is not whether it happens but what the contract says when it does — rerouting to sheltered northern anchorages, a night extension, or a date move. Get that answer in writing before you pay a deposit.
Do “Deluxe”, “VIP” and “VVIP” actually mean anything?
Not across companies. There is no regulator assigning those grades in Labuan Bajo; each operator defines its own tiers and maps its own boats to them. Our VIP tier means one thing on our fleet; another company’s “luxury” may sit below it or above it. Treat class labels as a shortcut for browsing, never as a specification.
Price behaves the same way. Whole-boat rates in Komodo run from roughly USD 1,800 to USD 30,000 per night, and across a 2026 survey of 179 vessels the 61 that published rates had a median of USD 7,150 per night. That median is the number to argue with, not a brochure adjective. Our own published Komodo charter rate bands set out where each class sits.
Comparing price without comparing the wrong thing
Two quotes are only comparable when both are whole-boat and both list inclusions the same way. A per-person figure from a shared sailing and a whole-boat private charter rate are different products. Check whether crew, chef, all meals, snorkelling gear, tender fuel and port charges are inside the number, and whether park fees are separate. Komodo National Park tickets in 2026 are dated and cost IDR 650,000 (about USD 40) per person for a standard three-day, two-night visit, billed on top of most charter rates.
Timing is the last variable. Median booking lead time across 1,063 enquiries we handled between November 2025 and August 2026 was 74 days. Inside that window, choice narrows to whatever is still open rather than the boat that actually fits your group — which is the whole point of comparing properly in the first place.
The short version you can send to any operator
- Do you own this vessel or dispatch it for an owner?
- What is the registered gross tonnage and the beam?
- Send the deck plan with cabin types, bed configurations and deck positions.
- Generator configuration in kVA, and is there a second unit?
- Fresh-water tank capacity in litres, and cruising speed in knots.
- Navigation and safety inventory by name, including life-raft capacity and certificate date.
- What happens if the harbourmaster withholds sailing approval on our dates?
- Is the quote whole-boat, and what sits outside it?
Eight questions, one message. Any operator running a real boat can answer all eight the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Vinca Voyages owned by Komodo Luxury?
No. Vinca Voyages is a vetted partner yacht in our network, not part of our owned fleet. She measures 31 m by 5.5 m with 6 cabins for 14 to 18 guests. Her owner controls day-to-day standards; we inspect her against our 12-point standard before dispatch and handle the booking and payment protection.
How many phinisi does Komodo Luxury own outright?
Nine: Komodo Signature, Komodo Prestige, Naturalia, Ayvara, Malca Voyages, Catnazse, Pinta, Mosalaki and Neptune Cruise. Crew, maintenance and service on those vessels are handled in house, year-round. Everything else we dispatch is a vetted partner yacht, labelled as such on its own listing page rather than presented as ours.
Is gross tonnage or length the better way to size a phinisi?
Gross tonnage, because it measures internal volume rather than a single dimension. Two 30 m phinisi can differ by several metres of beam and a whole deck of usable space. Ask for GT and beam together: Pinta is 30 m by 6 m at GT 83, while Malca Voyages is 30 m by only 5.1 m.
How many cabins do I need for my group?
Count sleeping arrangements, not cabins. A boat listed with 8 cabins may be rated for 24 guests once extra beds and bunk rooms are counted, as Naturalia is, or for 18, as Catnazse is. Request the cabin-by-cabin breakdown showing bed sizes, deck positions and which rooms have windows rather than portholes.
What happens if bad weather closes the Komodo and Padar routes?
The harbourmaster in Labuan Bajo, KSOP Kelas III, can withhold sailing approval. It happened for three days from 22 to 24 July 2026 and again from 6 to 8 August 2026. Ask any operator, in writing, whether they reroute to sheltered anchorages, extend, or move your dates, and who carries the cost.
Does a longer phinisi automatically cost more per night?
No. Marea, a 36 m partner phinisi with 8 cabins, opens from USD 4,950 per night, while the 28 m Mosalaki opens from USD 6,400. Rate is driven by cabin quality, generator capacity, crew depth and how recently the interior was rebuilt, not by hull length alone.
How far ahead should I book a Komodo phinisi charter?
Median lead time across 1,063 enquiries we handled between November 2025 and August 2026 was 74 days. Booking closer than that usually means choosing from remaining availability rather than the vessel that suits your group, particularly across the April to October dry season when the best-rated boats fill first.
Are Komodo National Park fees included in the charter rate?
Usually not. Park tickets in 2026 are dated and cost IDR 650,000, roughly USD 40, per person for a standard three-day, two-night visit, and are normally billed separately from the vessel rate. Confirm in writing whether ranger fees and other mandatory local charges sit inside or outside your quote.
