Three crater lakes on one volcano, each a different colour, each shifting hue over the years as the mineral chemistry changes — the reason every Kelimutu tour starts in the dark. From Moni you drive up inside the national park before dawn, walk the stepped path from the car park to the viewpoint, and watch the lakes surface out of the night. Local Lio tradition holds the lakes as a resting place for departed souls, which is easier to believe at 5:30 a.m. than it sounds in print. Bring a warm layer — the summit is cold before sunrise even in August — and stay after the crowds leave; the colours read better in full light.
