International guests pay a Komodo charter in two stages: a deposit that holds the vessel and the dates, then the balance before embarkation. Both are normally settled by card through Stripe or Airwallex, or by transfer to the operator’s company account. Card is the stronger route, because card payments carry formal dispute rights a wire transfer does not.

What follows is the mechanics: how the money leaves your bank, what it costs on the way, which currency the numbers should sit in, and what each route gives you if something goes wrong. Our own registration and banking details are on the Komodo Luxury company facts page — PT Komodo Bahari Nusantara, KBLI 79120, operating from Labuan Bajo since 2015.

We have received 610 enquiries in languages other than English, from guests in 57 countries. The itinerary questions vary enormously by market. The payment questions barely vary at all: how much now, how much later, in what currency, and what happens to that money if the trip does not happen.

How is a Komodo charter paid, and when?

A whole-boat charter is not a hotel room. When your deposit lands, the hull comes off the calendar, a crew is rostered against your dates, park permits are queued and provisioning is planned around your guest list. That is what the first payment buys, and it is why almost nobody in this market holds dates on a promise.

The regional pattern is a deposit on confirmation with the balance settled roughly a month before embarkation. Bookings made inside that window are usually paid in one movement. Our median booking lead time is 74 days, measured across 1,063 bookings between November 2025 and August 2026, so most guests have about six weeks sitting between their two payments.

That gap is where the avoidable problems hide. It is long enough for an exchange rate to move against you, for a card to expire, and for a bank’s fraud team to forget it approved the first charge.

Which payment methods work from abroad?

We accept Stripe, Airwallex, American Express, Visa and Mastercard. Those cover two different rails. Stripe handles card processing, including the 3-D Secure step your bank may throw at you on a first-time cross-border charge. Airwallex handles collection, which means a transfer can often be made domestically in your own market rather than pushed halfway around the world on the SWIFT network.

The distinction matters for cost. A SWIFT transfer collects fees at both ends and can also be trimmed by an intermediary bank in the middle, which is how an invoice quietly arrives 30 or 40 dollars short. Before sending one, ask your bank whether charges are set to OUR, SHA or BEN, and instruct that all charges are yours.

American Express is worth a note of its own. It is accepted for charter payments, but acceptance among small Indonesian merchants ashore is thinner than Visa or Mastercard, so it should not be the only card in your wallet.

Two things we do not do. We do not take cryptocurrency, because a confirmed transaction cannot be reversed by anyone including us. And we do not ask you to pay an individual. The receiving account carries the legal company name, which is the single detail worth checking on any quotation you receive in this market, ours included. The structure behind that is set out on our Komodo tour operator page.

Which currency should the contract be written in?

Charter contracts for foreign guests are commonly denominated in US dollars, while the boat’s own costs are not. Fuel, crew wages, harbour fees and park tickets are all rupiah expenses. Bank Indonesia Regulation 17/3/PBI/2015, in force for non-cash transactions since 1 July 2015, requires the rupiah for transactions inside Indonesian territory, with defined exemptions such as international trade. In practice that is why the local line items in any Komodo quotation are rupiah figures no matter what currency sits at the bottom of the page.

Currency direction is not academic in 2026. The rupiah opened the year around IDR 16,675 to the US dollar and was quoted near IDR 17,880 in Bank Indonesia’s JISDOR reference on 12 August 2026, roughly 7% weaker across eight months. A fixed price in dollars means the operator absorbs that movement, not you. Your own exposure is whatever sits between your home currency and the dollar over those 74 days.

Decline the offer to pay in your own currency

When a payment page or an Indonesian card terminal offers to bill you in euros, pounds or Australian dollars instead of the local currency, that is dynamic currency conversion. Independent pricing studies of DCC have found markups clustering in the mid-single digits and reaching well above 10% in the worst cases, all of it on top of the rate your own bank would have used.

Choose the merchant’s currency and let your issuer convert. Your issuer’s foreign transaction fee is typically between zero and 3%, disclosed in your card agreement, and it is nearly always the smaller number. If you hold a card with no foreign transaction fee, use it for both payments.

What protection does each payment route actually give you?

This is the real reason to reach for plastic. Visa’s published rules allow a dispute for services not received to be processed no later than 120 calendar days from the last date the cardholder expected to receive the service, and not more than 540 calendar days from the transaction processing date. That second figure matters, because a charter deposit is often paid months ahead. Mastercard operates a comparable framework.

British travellers should know one distinction that catches people out: Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act attaches to credit cards on purchases over GBP 100 and reaches overseas suppliers, but not to ordinary debit cards. A debit card leaves you with the scheme chargeback process instead.

Insurance is the layer most guests assume they already have. Cover for end supplier failure is usually an optional add-on in the UK, US and Australian markets rather than standard cancellation cover, so read that clause by name. Insurers who pay these claims want the invoice, proof of payment and evidence the amount was non-refundable.

One structural point for European guests: a flight bought from an airline plus a charter bought directly from an Indonesian operator is normally two separate contracts, not a package under Directive 2015/2302. The protections attaching to a package sold by an EU-established organiser do not follow you into a direct booking. Your card network is the practical backstop.

What should be on the invoice before you pay anything?

A charter invoice is a document you may need eighteen months later for an insurance claim or a card dispute. Ours carries the following, and any operator’s should.

  • The full legal company name and registration, not just a brand name.
  • The vessel name, and whether that hull is owned by the operator or a contracted partner boat.
  • Exact embarkation and disembarkation dates, times and ports.
  • Guest count and cabin allocation.
  • The total, the deposit, the balance and the date the balance falls due.
  • The currency, stated once and consistently.
  • What is included, and specifically whether park tickets, ranger fees and harbour fees sit inside or outside the rate.
  • The written cancellation and itinerary-change policy, in the same document rather than a separate link.

Ask for the weather and cancellation clause in writing before the deposit rather than after. Komodo is a working sea area and captains reroute for conditions; what matters is that the policy was written down before either side needed it. Our fleet position, 9 owned and operated yachts alongside 200+ vetted partner vessels, appears on every quotation for the same reason.

What do you still pay locally, and in what currency?

Komodo National Park entry for 2026 is IDR 650,000 per person, around USD 40, and it is a dated ticket tied to a named visit day. That detail has a payment consequence: moving your departure by a day is not a free administrative change, because the ticket has to be reissued for the new date.

If your routing passes through Bali, the provincial tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per international visitor is separate from anything a Komodo operator charges. Onboard extras vary by vessel and are usually settled at the end of the charter: premium spirits, spa treatments, dive packages and crew gratuities. Exactly what sits inside a nightly rate differs across the market, and the current bands are set out on our Komodo yacht charter pricing pages.

Carry some rupiah regardless. Labuan Bajo ATMs cap each withdrawal, so topping up for tips and shore purchases can take more than one visit, and Canada’s official travel advice flags card fraud as a risk across Indonesia. Bank-attached machines in daylight remain the sensible habit.

Card terms differ by issuer, so treat the percentages above as the shape of the thing rather than a quote. Two decisions survive every variation: pay by card where you can, and check that the name on the receiving account is the name on the contract.

Before you send the deposit

Ask for the invoice first, read the cancellation clause, choose the merchant’s currency at checkout, keep every receipt in one folder. Then go back to the boat itself, because payment terms are the easy half of this decision. Our private whole-boat charters in Komodo and the wider luxury phinisi fleet are quoted the same way for every market we serve.

Komodo Luxury has operated from Labuan Bajo since 2015 and holds a 4.9 out of 5 rating from more than 1,500 verified guests, with TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice recognition in 2025 and 2026. If you want a quotation reviewed line by line before you commit to anything, send it to us on WhatsApp at +62 811 3823 875 or write to [email protected]. We will read it in whichever currency it arrives in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay a Komodo charter deposit by credit card?

Yes. We process Visa, Mastercard and American Express through Stripe, and cross-border collections through Airwallex. Card is the route we recommend for a deposit sent from abroad, because scheme rules give you a formal dispute window that a bank transfer does not. Expect a 3-D Secure verification step from your own bank on the first charge.

How much deposit is normal, and when is the balance due?

The regional pattern is a deposit on confirmation with the balance settled around 30 days before embarkation, and a single payment for bookings made inside that window. With a median lead time of 74 days, most guests have roughly six weeks between the two. The exact split belongs in your written invoice before you pay anything.

Should I let the payment page bill me in my own currency?

No. That option is dynamic currency conversion, and the exchange rate it applies sits above the interbank rate, sometimes by more than 10%. Choose the merchant’s currency and let your card issuer convert. Your issuer’s foreign transaction fee is typically between zero and 3%, and is disclosed in your card agreement.

Is a bank transfer safe if I cannot use a card?

It is workable, with two conditions. The receiving account must carry the operator’s legal company name, and you should instruct your bank that all charges are yours, otherwise an intermediary bank can deduct a fee in transit and the invoice arrives short. A transfer carries no chargeback right, only a recall request the recipient may decline.

Which currency will my charter contract be written in?

Contracts for international guests are usually denominated in US dollars, while local line items such as park tickets and harbour fees stay in rupiah, since Indonesian regulation requires the rupiah for transactions inside Indonesia. A fixed dollar price means the operator, not you, absorbs rupiah movement between booking and departure.

Are Komodo National Park tickets included in the charter price?

It varies by operator, so ask before you pay. The 2026 fee is IDR 650,000 per person, roughly USD 40, and it is a dated ticket issued for a named visit day. Because it is date-specific, shifting your departure means the ticket has to be reissued rather than simply carried over.

Does travel insurance cover a prepaid charter deposit?

Not automatically. Cover for supplier financial failure is commonly sold as an optional add-on rather than included in standard cancellation cover, particularly in the UK, US and Australian markets. Check that clause by name. Insurers who pay these claims want the invoice, proof of payment and evidence that the amount was non-refundable.

How much cash should I bring to Labuan Bajo?

Enough rupiah for gratuities, shore purchases and small harbour costs. Local ATMs cap each withdrawal, so a full top-up can take more than one visit, and Canadian government travel advice flags card fraud risk across Indonesia. Use bank-attached machines in daylight and keep the charter payments themselves on the card rails.
