Across 1,063 Komodo charter bookings we confirmed between November 2025 and August 2026, the median lead time was 74 days — about ten and a half weeks. That is a midpoint, not a recommendation. For July, August and the festive weeks, book six to nine months out; for April to June and October, eight to twelve weeks is usually enough.
We have run boats out of Labuan Bajo since 2015, and this is the question that arrives most often disguised as an apology: sorry, is it too late? The useful answer has two halves — the number, and the reason the number should not set your calendar on its own. What does the booking data actually say?
The 74-day figure is ours, taken from the reservations desk rather than a survey. Sample size 1,063 confirmed bookings, window November 2025 to August 2026, measured from the day a guest confirmed to the day they boarded.
A median is the middle of the line, not the front of it. Half of those 1,063 guests booked earlier than 74 days; half booked later. It tells you where the crowd sits. It says nothing about whether the boat you have already fallen for is free ten weeks out, and for a specific vessel on a specific week in high season, it usually is not.
That is where the number gets misused. Guests read a median and hear a deadline. Treat 74 days as a floor for flexible travellers in quiet months, and as a warning for everyone else.
Why does the median hide the real answer?
Because two unrelated bookings are averaged inside it. A couple taking a small boat for three nights in late May behaves nothing like a family of twelve locking a 66-metre yacht for New Year, and the arithmetic drops them both in the same bucket.
Whole-boat charter is single-inventory. There is one Komodo Signature at 78.2 metres and one Komodo Prestige at 66 metres. When a week on either is taken, it is taken; no second unit gets released, and no amount of budget conjures one. Our nine owned and operated yachts all work that way. So the sharper question is not how far ahead should I book. It is how much choice do I want left when I book. Only the second one is under your control.

Which dates lock up first?
Four clusters do most of the damage, and three of them have nothing to do with the weather.
July and August. European summer holidays, Italian Ferragosto around 15 August, and the German and Dutch school breaks all land inside the same eight weeks. This is also when the southeast trade wind is at its firmest across the southern park, so demand peaks in the window that sails least smoothly. Guests who care more about flat water than school dates do better in May, June, September or October — and book against far less competition.
Christmas and New Year. A twelve-month window is not paranoia here. The festive block sells the large boats first, and the domestic flights into Labuan Bajo tighten at the same time, which turns a boat problem into a logistics problem.
Chinese New Year, 17 February 2026. Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland demand compresses into roughly one week. It is short, sharp, and it clears fast afterwards.
The March 2026 collision. Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, falls on Thursday 19 March 2026. Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport closes completely for 24 hours, from 06:00 on 19 March to 06:00 on 20 March, suspending on the order of 440 regular commercial flights. Idul Fitri follows immediately on 20 and 21 March 2026, with joint holiday days on 18, 19, 22 and 23 March. Domestic Indonesian travel surges across that entire block. If your route touches Denpasar, do not plan a transit on 19 March 2026 — there is no flight to miss, because there are no flights.
What has to be booked besides the boat?
The yacht is one of four bookings. Guests who think only about the yacht are the ones who call us at short notice with a real problem.
The domestic flight. Denpasar to Labuan Bajo runs around 51 nonstop flights a week, roughly seven a day, at 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes in the air. Jakarta to Labuan Bajo is thinner at about three a day, 2 hours 20 to 2 hours 35 minutes. Seven daily departures sounds generous until a peak week funnels everyone onto the two morning services that connect with long-haul arrivals.
The park ticket. Komodo National Park entry in 2026 is IDR 650,000 per person, roughly USD 40, and it is a dated ticket — issued against a specific day rather than left open. We file these for guests, but they are tied to the sailing dates on your confirmation. That is one more reason a late change of dates is never a clean swap.
The visa. Indonesia’s e-VOA costs IDR 500,000, grants 30 days, extends once by another 30, and requires a passport valid at least six months on arrival. You can apply online up to 90 days before arrival. Passport validity is the item that quietly ends trips: check it the day you start planning, not the week you fly.
The long-haul flight. For guests coming from Europe, North America or Australia this is usually the largest single line in the budget and the one that rewards booking early. Hold the boat first, then buy the long-haul against a date you already own.
Does booking later change the rate?
Not the way people hope. Whole-boat pricing is set by the vessel, the season and the length of the charter. In a survey of 179 Komodo vessels we could identify, 61 published a usable nightly rate and the median sat at USD 7,150. That median tracks the boat, not the calendar.
What waiting reliably changes is the set of boats still standing at each level. Late in a busy month, what remains is not the value end of the fleet — it is whatever the market passed over, or whatever sits a tier above where the group was shopping. Late booking narrows choice far more predictably than it moves price. A luxury phinisi in Komodo that suits ten guests has perhaps a dozen serious equivalents; by August, several of those are already gone.
In what order should you book?
Sequence matters more than speed, and most people run it backwards.
- Hold the boat first. It is the only item with a single unit. Flights and hotels have inventory behind them; a named yacht on a named week does not.
- Buy the long-haul second, against dates you now control rather than dates you hope to get.
- Add the Denpasar or Jakarta connection third, allowing a night in Bali before boarding. A same-day connection into a morning departure leaves no margin if the long-haul slips.
- Park tickets, permits and dietary or dive requirements last. We handle these against your confirmed dates.
On payment: a deposit confirms the date and the balance falls due before departure, with the schedule written into your charter agreement rather than assumed. We settle through Stripe, Airwallex, AMEX, Visa and Mastercard, and the contract names PT Komodo Bahari Nusantara — the company that operates the boat, not an agency reselling someone else’s. What if you are inside 30 days?
Then ask anyway. Midweek departures in April to June and September to November frequently still have genuine options a week out, and cancellations move dates back into inventory all year. The mistake at short notice is silence — assuming nothing is free, and quietly downgrading the trip you actually wanted. Work backwards from the item with one unit. If a named yacht on a named week is the thing you want, that is the constraint, and everything else bends around it. If the dates are fixed and the boat is negotiable, you have far more room than the 74-day median suggests — a Labuan Bajo yacht rental at short notice is a solvable problem when you are open on the vessel.
