Raja Ampat is not one dive destination but four distinct ones: the fish-rich current corridors of Dampier Strait, the coral gardens of Fam and Piaynemo, the remote northern islands around Kawe and Wayag, and the limestone labyrinth of Misool. This guide maps the sites that shape a proper Raja Ampat voyage — from Cape Kri and Blue Magic to Magic Mountain and Melissa’s Garden — with an honest read on current, experience level, seasonal access and the route required to reach them.
One honesty note up front: there is no single official list or fixed number of Raja Ampat dive sites. Names, entry points and daily suitability vary between operators, tide, wind and route. This is the working map our team uses when matching a yacht, a season and a diver’s actual experience — not a brochure promise.

The Dampier Strait, the channel running between Waigeo and Batanta, is where almost every Raja Ampat itinerary spends most of its diving days — and for good reason. Twelve of the region’s best-known sites sit within a short boat ride of each other here, from the world-record reef at Cape Kri to the gentle jetty dives that double as the day’s snorkel stop. Currents range from barely-there to genuinely brisk, which is exactly what feeds the biomass that made this stretch of water famous.
Cape Kri is the site that put Raja Ampat on the map: a 1997 survey logged 374 fish species on a single dive here, still cited as an unofficial world record. The reef slopes from the shallows down past recreational limits, stacked with big predatory fish over a wide base of hard and soft coral. It rewards current-comfortable divers with schooling barracuda, giant trevally and reef sharks cutting through the blue.
An underwater seamount between Mios Kun and Cape Kri that pulls oceanic mantas in for regular passes, alongside dense schools of fusiliers and the occasional wobbegong shark tucked under an overhang. The current that makes this site work also makes it a poor choice for anyone still building their buoyancy — this is a hook-in-and-watch dive for confident divers.
A sandy cleaning station where manta rays queue to have parasites picked off by cleaner wrasse — and the single most reliable manta encounter in the Dampier Strait. Shallow enough to snorkel, calm enough for newly certified divers, and busy enough with life that experienced divers rarely tire of it either.
Second only to Cape Kri for sheer density of fish life, Sardine Reef packs white-tip reef sharks, hunting trevally, schooling batfish and pygmy seahorses into one compact site. One of the most requested dives on any Dampier Strait itinerary, and rarely a disappointment.
Large coral overhangs shelter sweetlips and soft corals below, while the shallow reef top draws big schools of fish over vibrant coral cover — good enough that snorkelers get a genuine show while divers work the depths.
A near-current-free site favoured for its resident wobbegong sharks and large schools of striped snapper. The gentle profile and abundant life make it a regular pick for mixed-level groups and check dives early in a trip.
Widely regarded as the region’s finest soft coral wall: sunlight hitting the upper reef ignites the colour of the corals, while macro hunters work the lower sections for nudibranchs, flatworms and pygmy seahorses. A wide-angle photographer’s favourite that also welcomes total beginners.
One of the larger reef systems in the strait, informally split into four sub-sites (Chicken Reef, Chicken Bay, Sleeping Barracuda, Surgeonfish Slope) — enough variety in current strength and marine life that dive guides can match it to almost any group.
A working village jetty whose pilings have become a macro photographer’s stop: pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs and schooling fish sheltering in the structure’s shade. Easy enough for a relaxed final dive of the day, and usually paired with a visit ashore to the village itself.
One of the calmest sites in the strait, with healthy coral cover and giant green turtles that make repeat appearances across a single dive. The near-total absence of current makes it a favourite for first-timers and underwater photographers who want to hold a shot steady.
An easy day dive that becomes a genuinely good night dive after dark, as the jetty pilings shelter schooling fish by day and smaller nocturnal critters after sunset.
Sitting between Kri and Koh Island where Dampier Strait currents concentrate nutrients, this site draws bumphead parrotfish grazing on the reef and blacktip reef sharks patrolling the current line — a current-driven dive best left to comfortable, experienced divers.

Northwest of the Dampier Strait, the Fam Islands and the Piaynemo group trade current-driven drama for calm water, karst scenery and some of the healthiest hard coral in the region. This is where non-divers on a mixed manifest stop feeling like passengers — snorkelling and kayaking here are not a consolation prize.
Widely cited as the most pristine hard coral garden in Raja Ampat, this shallow site bursts with reef fish activity over a wide bed of table and staghorn corals. Gentle currents and shallow depths make it accessible to newer divers, while the sheer density of colour keeps experienced photographers coming back.
Raja Ampat’s most photographed panorama: a limestone karst viewpoint overlooking a lagoon of scattered islets. The climb to the top is the postcard shot; the lagoon below is a calm, shallow snorkel among small reef fish and the occasional reef shark.
A quieter, less-visited karst lagoon in the same family as Piaynemo — shallow, glassy water good for kayaking, with baby reef sharks occasionally seen cruising the shallows.
Fam Islands and Piaynemo sit further from the standard 7-day route and need the extra sailing time a longer charter gives them — compare Raja Ampat liveaboard routes to see which ones include this region.
Misool sits well south of the Dampier Strait — far enough that only longer charters reach it, and far enough that diver traffic here runs a fraction of the north’s. Inside its marine reserve, coral cover and fish biomass are frequently rated among the best in Raja Ampat precisely because so few boats make the journey.
Named for the natural rock “windows” carved through the reef structure, framed by soft corals and routinely hiding wobbegong sharks in their shadows. A relaxed, photogenic dive that rewards patience over pace.
Misool’s answer to Manta Sandy, but with a current that keeps it strictly for confident divers: a seamount cleaning station where mantas circle in for attention, backed by dense schools of sweetlips along the slope.
Regularly named the densest soft coral wall in Raja Ampat — every available surface carpeted in colour, demanding careful buoyancy from anyone diving it and rewarding that discipline generously in return.
True to its name: over 30 recorded nudibranch species share this wall with pygmy seahorses and ghost pipefish, in a submarine landscape that shifts between soft coral and hard coral sections along its length.

Not a dive site — the most photographed location in Raja Ampat regardless. A steep climb to a karst viewpoint overlooks a lagoon studded with limestone islets, with easy, shallow snorkelling below. Reaching it adds meaningful sailing time to any itinerary, which is why it typically shows up only on longer charters. See our Wayag Island page for details.
A mangrove-fringed bay on Gam Island’s northern coast, better known for kayaking and dolphin sightings than diving — a calm counterpoint to the current-driven sites elsewhere in the strait.
Manta Sandy in the Dampier Strait is the region’s most dependable manta encounter — shallow, snorkel-accessible, and active year-round with a clear peak from November through April. Magic Mountain in Misool offers a second, more remote cleaning station for divers making the longer journey south.
Wobbegong sharks — the “walking sharks” of Raja Ampat — are resident at Blue Magic, Mios Kun and Boo Windows, tucked under overhangs by day. White-tip and blacktip reef sharks patrol the current-driven sites, while Cape Kri and Blue Magic bring the giant trevally and barracuda shows current lovers travel for.
Friwenbonda, Arborek Jetty and Misool’s Nudi Rock carry the macro crown — pygmy seahorses on sea fans, dense nudibranch counts, and ghost pipefish for anyone willing to slow down and look closely.
Raja Ampat is diveable across the year, but it is not the same trip in every month. The broad liveaboard season commonly runs from October to April, when many operators focus their Raja Ampat fleet around calmer sailing conditions. Water temperature is usually tropical, roughly 27–30°C, yet rain, wind, visibility, surface chop and local current are route-specific realities — especially between remote regions.
An early-season window for central, north and Misool routes, with conditions and vessel positioning shaping what is practical. A strong choice for divers seeking broad route options, subject to weather.
The core period many liveaboards use for Raja Ampat. Expect tropical weather patterns, changing visibility and the need for itinerary flexibility — which is why experienced local crew matter.
A transition period. Some voyages still run successfully, but final routing depends more heavily on the particular boat, region and prevailing conditions.
Many liveaboard fleets move toward Komodo and other eastern Indonesian routes. Raja Ampat travel remains possible in certain forms, but do not assume a standard north-to-south liveaboard itinerary is operating.

Best for a deliberate, single-region experience: Dampier Strait with Fam, or a dedicated Misool exploration. Choose this length when you prefer quality time at a coherent set of sites over a rushed checklist.
Add Fam, Kawe and Aljui Bay to a central itinerary when vessel speed, weather and routing margin support it. This is the format for divers who want both large-life action and macro contrast.
The practical choice for connecting more distant regions with enough margin to dive rather than merely transit. Exact north–south combinations depend on departure port, season, yacht range and conditions.
Shared-cabin divers can start with the scheduled share trip departures, while guests wanting the whole boat to themselves should look at private trip packages or, for shorter time on the ground, the speedboat tour option. Open Water certification may be appropriate for selected shallow, sheltered sites, but it is not a universal passport to Raja Ampat’s most exposed reefs. Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Sardine Reef, Manta Ridge, Kawe and current-heavy Misool sites often require advanced certification and, more importantly, meaningful comfort in current. Your logbook, buoyancy and recent diving matter more than enthusiasm.
Raja Ampat works beautifully for mixed groups when the itinerary is designed for it. Selected manta-station sessions, jetties, shallow reef gardens, lagoons and island stops give snorkellers and non-divers a real day on the water, while experienced divers add the deeper or current-driven sites. Ask for a mixed-group route rather than assuming every dive site is suitable for everyone.
No touching coral. No chasing mantas. No gloves for holding living reef. Keep a respectful distance from all wildlife, secure gauges and cameras, and accept the guide’s decision when conditions change. Raja Ampat’s value is inseparable from the care shown by the people who visit it.
Every visitor to the Raja Ampat Marine Park needs a dated entry tag (locally known as the PIN or marine park permit), checked at multiple points during the trip — this applies whether you’re diving, snorkelling, or simply visiting the islands. Standard reef etiquette applies everywhere in the park: no touching, no gloves, no chasing wildlife, and no collecting. Reef hook use follows the same operator-dependent practice as elsewhere in Indonesia — our guides use them only on current-swept, non-living substrate, never on coral.
From the Dive Deck
Raja Ampat’s best diving is driven by moving water. A site can be relaxed at one tide, exposed at another and temporarily unsuitable when wind or surface conditions change. The route plan is therefore a framework, not a contract with the ocean. Good dive operations read the tide, look at the sea, run a current check and choose the best site for the group at that moment — even if that means replacing a famous name with a less-photographed but better dive.
That flexibility matters most on a private yacht. A well-routed voyage can adjust the sequence, use an early morning window, spend longer in a productive bay or change a crossing plan before discomfort becomes the story of the day. The objective is never to tick every site. It is to make every entry worth remembering.
