Most guests who ask our reservations desk about a Labuan Bajo land and sea tour already have the boat part in mind. They have a 3D2N Komodo trip booked or shortlisted, and the real question for their Komodo and Flores itinerary is what happens once the boat docks: can Wae Rebo or Kelimutu be added afterwards, in which order, how many extra days it takes, and which airport they leave from. This is how we answer that question on WhatsApp every day, using the Flores packages exactly as they are published rather than a format invented for a blog post.
Quick answer: Yes, both work after a Komodo boat trip. Wae Rebo adds two days from Labuan Bajo. Kelimutu means the one-way overland east, flying out of Ende or Maumere: boat plus Kelimutu is the 8 to 9 day combo on our Flores tour packages page. Both together means the seven-day Grand Flores. Keep a buffer night between boat and road; the desk confirms each leg per date in writing.
Below are the three ways the combination is usually put together, the order that suits each one, the total day count, the timing facts that shape the handover from boat to road, and what the desk confirms in writing before you pay. Where a number appears, it is a figure printed on a Komodo Luxury page or rate card, with the date we checked it.
What a land and sea tour means at our desk
At the desk, a land and sea tour is two bookings joined by one harbour handover: a boat leg through Komodo National Park, then a private overland leg on the Trans-Flores Highway with your own vehicle and an English-speaking driver-guide. The overland leg is always private and starts on the date you choose; the sea leg is where you have a choice to make.
- Shared 3D2N cabin. You book a cabin on a scheduled departure and share the boat with other guests. This is the sea leg most guests pair with Flores because it is the shortest and the simplest to slot before the drive. Route and cabin categories are on the 3D2N Komodo tour page.
- Liveaboard for divers. If diving is the point of the sea days, a Komodo liveaboard replaces the standard 3D2N; the overland leg afterwards is unchanged.
- Private charter. The whole boat is yours, so departure and return times can be tuned to the road plan. The options are described on our luxury yacht charter Komodo page, and the general shape of a Komodo sailing trip is the same whichever vessel you choose.
Whichever sea leg you take, the 3D2N pattern covers the same sites: Padar Island, Komodo Island, Pink Beach, Manta Point, Taka Makassar and the sunset flying foxes at Kalong Island. Option 1: add Wae Rebo after the boat (two extra days)
Wae Rebo is the easiest extension to bolt onto a boat trip because it is a closed loop from Labuan Bajo. Our published arrangement is a 2D1N package: drive to Denge, walk in, sleep in the village, walk out and return. It runs as the first two days of the 7-Day Grand Flores route on the packages page, and the desk also arranges it on its own after a 3D2N boat.
Day by day
- Overland day 1. Your driver-guide meets you at your Labuan Bajo hotel (or, if you skip the buffer night, at the harbour when the boat returns) and drives the coast road to Denge. From Denge the trek into the cloud forest takes roughly two to four hours depending on pace. You arrive to a welcome ceremony with the village elders and sleep communally in one of the seven cone-shaped mbaru niang houses.
- Overland day 2. Descend in the morning and drive back to Labuan Bajo for a night in town and your flight out the next day, or continue east to Ruteng if you are joining the longer overland route.
Bring a headlamp, a light rain layer even in the dry season and shoes you trust on wet stone. The village and your guide provide the rest. The Wae Rebo village guide covers the culture and etiquette in more depth; here we stay on the logistics.
Who it suits, and the honest mobility note
Wae Rebo is a genuine mountain walk, not a photo stop, and it is the most demanding stop on any Flores itinerary. It suits guests who are comfortable with two to four hours on a wet, stepped forest path in each direction and with a communal night in a traditional house. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, tell the desk before we quote: Bena village near Bajawa is reached by road and gives living tradition without the trek. Option 2: add Kelimutu (the one-way overland, four to five extra days)
This is where most of the confusion sits. Kelimutu is not a side trip from Labuan Bajo the way Wae Rebo is. It lies in the east of the island, four driving legs along the Trans-Flores Highway, and the way to reach it from a Komodo boat trip is the 5-Day Flores Overland: Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu package, which runs one way and ends with a flight out of the east. On the packages page this combination appears as Komodo Boat Trip 3D2N + Flores Overland, listed at 8 to 9 days in total.
The route, one driving leg per day
- Labuan Bajo to Ruteng (about 130 km, four hours as published) via the spider-web rice fields at Cancar; overnight Ruteng.
- Ruteng to Bajawa with a stop at Bena traditional village beneath Mount Inerie; overnight Bajawa.
- Bajawa to Moni along the south coast road through Ende, with the Mangeruda hot springs on the way out of Bajawa; overnight Moni at the foot of Kelimutu.
- Kelimutu sunrise: a pre-dawn drive into the national park and a walk up the stepped path to the viewpoint over the three crater lakes, then down to Ende.
- Fly out of Ende or Maumere.
The highway is sealed for the whole route but narrow and winding, which is why the itinerary caps driving at one leg per day. In the rainy months, November to March, landslides can add short delays on the south coast road; your driver-guide re-sequences the day if that happens. Why you fly out instead of driving back
Driving back west would mean repeating the same legs in reverse, three more days on the same road, so the published route ends at Ende and you fly from Ende or Maumere. Flight schedules at both airports change through the year, so the desk checks the current timetable on the day we quote and builds the last overland day around a flight that is actually on sale. We do not name an airline a year ahead in writing, because that is the kind of promise that ages badly.
Option 3: both Wae Rebo and Kelimutu (about 10 days in total)
If you want both, the way we build it is the published 7-Day Grand Flores with Wae Rebo Trek after the boat: days one and two are the Wae Rebo circuit, then Ruteng, Bajawa, the Riung 17 Islands boat day, the Kelimutu sunrise and arrival in Maumere for the flight out. With a 3D2N boat in front and one buffer night in Labuan Bajo between the two, that is 10 to 11 days on the ground in Flores and Komodo.
Who should not book this: anyone whose total time in Indonesia is a week, and anyone for whom the Wae Rebo trek is doubtful. In both cases the 6-Day Trans-Flores crossing to Maumere is the better fit; it keeps Kelimutu and the Riung boat day and drops the trek. The desk will say so when we see your dates, because a route that is one day too long shows in the last two days of the trip.
Boat first or overland first?
Both directions are published, and the choice mostly depends on which airport you would rather finish at. Boat first means you fly into Labuan Bajo, sail, hand over at the harbour and drive east, ending at Ende or Maumere. Overland first is the package called Kelimutu to Komodo (Lakes to Dragons): fly into Maumere, drive west with one leg per day and finish with the boat, leaving from Labuan Bajo, which has the better onward connections to Bali and Jakarta.

Whichever direction you choose, the buffer night is the part we insist on. Boats occasionally return late in rough weather, and a spare night in Labuan Bajo keeps overland day one intact. How many days do you need in total?
These totals for a Komodo and Flores itinerary use the published package durations plus the 3D2N boat and one buffer night. They are for the combination decision; if you are asking how long Flores alone deserves, that question is answered separately in how many days do you need in Flores, and we do not repeat it here.

Add your international connection days on top. Most guests arrive in Labuan Bajo the day before the boat, which the desk recommends for every departure, so the first line above is often seven calendar days door to door.
What the reservations desk confirms before you pay
A combined itinerary has more moving parts than a boat alone, so we confirm each of them per date and put the result in writing. Nothing below is promised on a first message; it is checked and then confirmed.
- Boat availability for your dates. The cabin or the whole vessel is checked per date. Once you are ready to proceed, the team reconfirms current availability during office hours (09:00 to 17:00 WITA) and can hold a cabin for 2 x 24 hours (48 hours) while the deposit is arranged. Please do not pay before the hold is confirmed.
- Wae Rebo village nights. Confirmed per date with the village, which matters most in July and August.
- Vehicle and driver-guide. A private vehicle and an English-speaking driver-guide for the full route, with the luggage plan agreed before departure.
- Hotel class per town. Ruteng, Bajawa, Riung, Moni and Maumere are quoted at the class you ask for, line by line, so you can see and change each night.
- A written itinerary and inclusions list. Day by day, with every component on its own line, sent within 24 hours of receiving your dates, group size and hotel class.
- Park fees. Komodo National Park dated entry tickets and Kelimutu National Park entrance are quoted separately from the boat and the road at the rate each park authority sets; Komodo National Park dated tickets are non-refundable once issued.
Payment follows the published policy: a 50% down payment is required to secure a booking, and full payment must be made no later than 30 days prior to the departure date. For bookings made one year in advance, a 30% deposit is required to confirm the charter, an additional 20% of the deposit must be paid 120 days before the trip, and the remaining balance is due 30 days before departure. The terms and conditions of the respective vessel apply to certain vessels, and children aged 3 years and above are charged the full rate. The desk sends the payment link with the confirmation, and the booking is valid once the deposit is made.
Timing facts that shape the plan
These are the operating times we give every guest, and they decide how the handover works. They are the reason the overland driver waits at the harbour rather than at the airport.
- Day 1 pickup is between 08:00 and 09:00 from hotels in the Labuan Bajo town area, in a staggered order, so a short wait is normal. Guests are added to a WhatsApp group the day before.
- Last day docking is between 11:00 and 12:00 at the latest. Have your bags ready for disembarkation by then.
- Harbour to airport is around 10 to 15 minutes by car, and airport drop-off after the boat is included if you are flying instead of driving. For a same-day flight we recommend a departure at 14:00 or later.
- Overland day one after the boat: with the buffer night, your driver-guide collects you from the hotel the next morning and you get a full first driving day. Without it, the driver-guide can meet you at the harbour when the boat docks, but the road day then starts around midday, so for both Wae Rebo and the Ruteng leg we recommend the buffer night; a same-day start is confirmed by the desk per date.
- Rainy months (November to March) can add short delays on the south coast road; we build in slack rather than promising clock times.

What it costs, on the published basis only
We quote the overland leg by component rather than as one rounded number, because two identical routes can differ once hotel class and boat choice change. The figures below are the published starting points and the basis each one is priced on, checked 12 September 2026. Your written quote is the figure that applies.

Private charter figures are taken from the Komodo Luxury B2C private charter rate cards (Final Edition, 11 September 2026) for the 3D2N package and the smallest guest band; larger groups move to the next band, other vessels are quoted on request, and itinerary, services, taxes, payment and cancellation terms are confirmed in the individual quotation. Can we add Wae Rebo after our 3D2N Komodo boat trip, and how many extra days do we need?
Yes. Wae Rebo is a published 2D1N arrangement from Labuan Bajo: drive to Denge, trek in, sleep in the village, trek out and drive back. With the buffer night after the boat, plan five to six days on the ground in total. The desk confirms the village night and the vehicle per date, and July and August village nights fill first.
Is Kelimutu possible as a two-day add-on from Labuan Bajo, or does it mean the full overland route?
It means the overland route. Kelimutu sits in the east of Flores, four driving legs from Labuan Bajo, so the published way to reach it after a boat trip is the 5-Day Flores Overland to Kelimutu, one leg per day, ending with a flight from Ende or Maumere. The combined boat and road plan is listed at 8 to 9 days.
Should we do the boat first or the overland first?
Both are published. Boat first suits guests arriving from Bali: sail, hand over at the harbour, drive east and fly out of Ende or Maumere. Overland first is the Lakes to Dragons package: fly into Maumere, drive west, finish with the boat and leave from Labuan Bajo, the airport with the better onward connections. Do we have to drive back to Labuan Bajo after Kelimutu, or can we fly out of Ende or Maumere?
You fly out. The published route ends at Ende after the sunrise, and the last day is built around a flight from Ende or Maumere so you are not repeating the road in reverse. Schedules on both airports change, so the desk checks the current timetable when quoting and confirms the flight day in the written itinerary.
Can the driver-guide pick us up straight from the harbour when the boat returns?
Yes, and the desk confirms it per date. Boats dock between 11:00 and 12:00 on the last day, and the driver-guide can meet you at the harbour if you choose to start the road that day. We still recommend a buffer night in Labuan Bajo: boats occasionally return late in rough weather, and a full morning start makes the four-hour first leg to Ruteng far more comfortable.
Is the overland part shared with other guests like an open-trip boat?
No. Every overland itinerary is private: your vehicle, your driver-guide and your pace, starting on the date you choose rather than on a fixed weekly departure. The sharing decision applies to the sea leg alone, where you can book a cabin on a scheduled 3D2N departure or take a private charter for the whole boat.
Can Wae Rebo be done in one day without sleeping in the village?
Our published arrangement is the 2D1N, and it is the version we quote as standard: the coast road to Denge plus a two-to-four-hour trek each way does not fit a comfortable single day, and the ceremony and the night in a mbaru niang house are the point of the visit. If a night away is not possible, tell the desk your dates and we will say what is realistic, or take Bena near Bajawa, which is reached by road.
