To verify a Komodo boat operator before paying, ask for five things: the vessel’s KSOP (harbormaster) port clearance, proof the company owns the boat you are booking, its Indonesian business registration, a USD invoice listing the Komodo National Park ticket as its own line, priced in rupiah, and a physical office address in Labuan Bajo.

The reason this page exists is uncomfortable. Across 2025 and 2026, Indonesian police documented repeated cases where deposits reached a seller but never reached a boat — including 22 travellers left standing at the harbour because the vessel they paid for was never booked, in a case that opened in mid-July 2026 — and in August 2025 the regional travel association ASITA NTT warned that some sellers show photographs of one vessel and supply a different one. The pattern is always the same: the money moved, the booking did not. Verification means confirming that the party you pay and the party that sails are one and the same.
The 60-Second Answer: Five Checks Before You Transfer Money

Each check relies on paperwork only a real operator holds. A company that runs its own boats answers all five in a single reply, because the answers sit in a drawer on the bridge.
Check 1 — KSOP Port Clearance: The Harbormaster Controls Every Departure
No boat leaves Labuan Bajo without the harbormaster’s say-so. Before each voyage, the operator files a passenger manifest and receives a Surat Persetujuan Berlayar (SPB) — port clearance issued by KSOP Labuan Bajo, voyage by voyage. You will never be sent one in advance, so use it as a process test: ask who files the SPB for your departure. An operator who does this weekly describes the routine without pausing; a reseller who has never filed one talks around it.
What the Syahbandar actually does — and why Maklumat 05/MP-VIII/2026 proved the system works in real time
The Syahbandar — the harbormaster — decides daily whether the water is open. The clearest recent proof came on 15 August 2026, when a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck roughly 200 km offshore: departures paused, the authorities assessed, and the harbormaster reopened sailing the same day in writing — Maklumat Pelayaran No. 05/MP-VIII/2026. Every guest and crew member across our four boats was safe that morning. That is the system your booking sits inside: no clearance, no departure, every day of the year.
Check 2 — Fleet Ownership: Does the Operator Own the Boat You Are Booking?
Owned and brokered are both legal models, and both can be excellent. What matters is knowing which arrangement you are in, because it decides who is accountable at six on departure morning when a generator will not start.
Owned vs brokered: who answers the phone when something goes wrong at sea
An owner dispatches its own engineer or substitutes a sister vessel. A reseller holding one contracted boat can only forward your messages and wait with you. Ask plainly: do you own this vessel, or is it a partner boat? Both answers are acceptable; only a refusal to answer is not.
That answer is already in writing for each of the eight vessels in the shipbuilding portfolio, where every record states the vessel’s operating arrangement first, then its published specifications and cabin mix.

That is proof an owner can produce on request and a reseller cannot: not a brochure, a log. One insider test outperforms every document: ask for a live video from the boat’s saloon, today. A crew genuinely aboard can film it in less time than it takes a seller to type an excuse. In this market, a vague answer to that request is the single most reliable warning sign we know.
Check 3 — The Invoice Test: USD Pricing and a Park Ticket Line in Rupiah
A clean Komodo invoice quotes in USD and itemises what is excluded. Two lines tell you nearly everything. First, the Komodo National Park fee: set by Government Regulation No. 36/2024 and displayed by the Balai at IDR 250,000 per international visitor per day, and IDR 50,000 per Indonesian visitor per day, IDR 75,000 on Sundays and public holidays. It is excluded from package prices; our desk registers every guest, pays the park in rupiah, and lists the park ticket once per person per sailing as a separate line on the invoice. Second, the scope: meals aboard, snorkel gear, a guide, and Labuan Bajo transfers normally sit inside the price, while insurance, alcohol, and diving are always separate line items.

Red flag: any operator quoting the park fee as a flat dollar figure has the rules wrong
Some resale sites still reduce the park fee to a round dollar figure. That is not how it is set: the regulation prices entry in rupiah, per visitor, for each day inside the park, and the Balai displays those figures. A seller who cannot name the rupiah rate has either never filed park paperwork or is padding the invoice — either way, that single line tells you whether they actually operate in this park.
Check 4 — Business Registration and a Physical Office in Labuan Bajo
Four documents establish that a legal entity exists and is licensed to sell what it is selling. Ask for all four as PDFs in one message. An operator who holds them attaches them within a working day; an operator who does not will change the subject.

The free check almost nobody makes takes ninety seconds: search the exact PT name from your invoice in the Ministry of Law’s public register at ahu.go.id. If it does not appear, stop and ask why. Then ask for a physical office address in Labuan Bajo — an operator you can walk into is an operator you can find again. Finally, follow the money: the receiving account must carry the company’s legal name, never an individual’s, and a card beats a bank wire because card payments carry formal dispute rights while a completed wire can only be recalled if the recipient agrees. A 50% deposit with the balance due roughly 30 days before departure is the regional norm; the split is not the warning sign — the account name is.

Screenshots pasted into a chat prove nothing; profiles you open yourself prove a history. Ask for direct links to Google Maps and TripAdvisor, then read like an auditor: dates spread across seasons rather than clustered in one week, replies from the operator, reviewers with their own history.
