On multi-day phinisi routes, Kelor anchors one of the best opening evenings in Indonesian cruising. Boats leave Labuan Bajo after lunch, reach Kelor with the light softening, and split the stop between the summit climb and the bay swim. From there it is a short reposition to Kalong Island, where at dusk thousands of flying foxes stream out of the mangroves against the sunset — watched from the foredeck with dinner on the way. Two landmark experiences before the first night at anchor, neither requiring an early alarm nor a long crossing: that sequence, more than any single feature, is why crews are fond of this small island.
It also explains a practical pattern: day-trip speedboats hit Kelor in the morning on the way out toward Rinca and the central islands, while liveaboards favor the afternoon. If you are on a private charter and want the summit to yourself, ask for the late slot — the day fleet is usually gone by 3 pm.
Published distances from Labuan Bajo vary between about 10 and 22 km depending on the measuring point, which is why crews quote travel time instead. Because the crossing is so short, Kelor also suits travelers with limited sea legs or tight schedules: it is entirely realistic to climb the summit, swim the bay, and be back in Labuan Bajo within half a day — the smallest possible taste of the park that still feels like the park.
