Kanawa once hosted a small resort with bungalows and a restaurant. Its infrastructure still stands in places, but operation has been inconsistent for years, and current guidance is simple: do not plan an overnight stay around Kanawa without confirming the latest status locally. The island and its reef remain fully accessible on guided day visits, which is how virtually all guests experience it now — and with the buildings quiet, the anchorage feels emptier than its quality deserves. For snorkelers, that quiet is the upside: a reef of this standard this close to Labuan Bajo would draw a crowd anywhere else. Kanawa lies within the park management area, so conservation rules apply on the reef exactly as they do deeper in the park; crews fold the dated-ticket paperwork into your trip (see our entrance fees guide).
Pair the house reef with Kelor Island’s summit hike for a strong half-day before or after the central park — the two islands sit on the same northern approach, and together they cover a viewpoint, a beach, and two distinct reefs without a single long crossing. Set expectations honestly: Kanawa is not a big-animal site and not a beach-day destination in the resort sense. It is a superb one-to-two-hour water stop — the kind of reef where the highlight is fifteen quiet minutes floating above a feeding turtle rather than anything dramatic. One rule matters more than any other: the turtles can appear tame, but touching, chasing, or crowding them is harmful and against park regulations and Indonesian law.
Plan your visit: Komodo Luxury (PT Komodo Bahari Nusantara, sailing Komodo since 2015) operates 9 owned phinisi and works with 200+ vetted partner yachts, rated 4.9/5 by more than 1,500 guests. Its jetty reef starts in waist-deep water, which makes Kanawa — with Sebayur — our crews’ standard answer when guests ask for the easiest snorkeling in the park.

問答
Kanawa Island is a low, palm-fringed island northwest of Labuan Bajo known for one thing above all: a house reef that begins right at the jetty. Step off the pier ladder and you are over coral heads busy with anthias, clownfish, turtles and the occasional baby blacktip reef shark cruising the shallows. For guests who want maximum reef time with minimum boat time, Kanawa is the easy answer.
Kanawa is 45 minutes by speedboat from Labuan Bajo, on the route toward the northern park sites. It appears on day trips as a long snorkel stop, and charters often use its calm anchorage for a swim-stop lunch.
Yes — arguably the best beginner spot on this coast. The reef starts at the jetty in calm, waist-to-chest-deep water, so you can stand, rest and re-enter easily.
Small blacktip reef sharks patrol the sandy shallows — they are harmless, shy and a highlight rather than a hazard. Turtles are seen on most visits.
Onshore facilities have changed hands over the years and are limited; most guests visit by day boat or sleep aboard a liveaboard anchored nearby. Ask us for the current situation when you book.
