Which one should you pick if you can only visit one? Padar’s Long Beach wins on sand color alone, it’s the more colorful of the two, plus it has that heart-shaped coral feature people love photographing. But Komodo Island’s version has a more dramatic backdrop of hills, and it’s a lot less crowded. If your itinerary is a standard 3D2N Komodo sailing trip, day two usually already includes Padar’s Pink Beach, so honestly, you may not have to choose at all. This may be the most colorful pink beach in Indonesia. The sand is brighter here than on Komodo Island. On this beach, named Long Beach,  there’s also a piece of red coral with a heart shape on the sand. The pink color of the sand is brighter, especially when the day is sunny. This beach is hidden in a bay on Padar Island’s north side and has become the most popular pink beach in Komodo National Park. What a lucky because you can find food stalls. So, they will be beneficial, especially when you’d like to purchase souvenirs, drinks, or snacks.

Komodo Island is not only about Komodo Dragons. However, this island also offers a standout pink beach in Indonesia named Pantai Merah. The sand is not as red or pink as the pink beach of Padar Island. However, the tall mountains and hills surrounding it and the beautiful shoreline make it very photogenic. If you want more awesome views, you had better hike up the hills. Even though there are many food stalls, they won’t interfere too much with the view.

Why Is the Sand at Pink Beach Pink?

The color comes from biology, not minerals or dye. Foraminifera are tiny, single-celled marine organisms that build microscopic shells out of calcium carbonate. One species in particular, Homotrema rubrum, lives on the undersides of coral ledges and reef rubble, and its shell carries a deep red pigment. When these organisms die, wave action grinds their shells into fine red grains that wash up on shore.

Those red grains blend with two white ingredients: broken coral skeletons, and sand that’s literally passed through a parrotfish, these fish spend their days crunching on coral and excreting it as fine white powder (yes, really, a good chunk of “white sand” anywhere in the tropics started out as fish digestion). Add in fragments of red organ-pipe coral (Tubipora musica), and the combination reads as pink to the eye. It doesn’t take much red to tip the balance, scoop up a handful of sand and you can actually see individual crimson specks scattered through the white.

How pink it looks on any given day depends on conditions. Wet sand at the tide line always looks the most vivid, low morning or late-afternoon light deepens the color, and harsh midday sun tends to flatten it out. So if the photos you’ve seen online look more saturated than what you experienced in person, that’s not you, it’s usually a wet-sand, golden-hour shot. This is the same biological mechanism behind Bermuda’s famous pink beaches, but very few places on Earth have it, and Komodo National Park happens to have two.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Pink Beach?

Dry season runs roughly April through October, and within that window, April–June and September–November are the sweet spots, with settled seas, strong underwater visibility, and noticeably thinner crowds than the July–August peak. January–February brings the west monsoon, with rougher crossings and occasional sailing pauses.

Time of day matters just as much as the season. Day-trip boats tend to cluster here between about 10 am and 2 pm, so if you arrive before 9 am or after 3 pm, you might have the bay to yourself and one other boat. Photographers especially should aim for the morning, low sun, wet sand, and calm water together produce the most vivid pink. This is really the best argument for an overnight sailing trip over a single-day dash: you’re sleeping inside the park already, so you beat the day-trip fleet to the good light.

What You Shouldn’t Do at Pink Beach

A few rules exist for good reason, this ecosystem is fragile, and it’s also legally protected:

• Never take sand home. Removing sand, shells, or coral is prohibited under Komodo National Park regulations, and rangers and airport security do check bags. The pink exists because the reef is alive; every jar taken chips away at something that took centuries to build.
• Don’t stand on or touch coral. Fin carefully in the shallows, one careless kick can undo decades of coral growth.
• Use reef-safe sunscreen, or better yet, wear a rash guard instead, oxybenzone-based sunscreens damage the very organisms responsible for the beach’s color.
• Pack out everything you bring. There are no bins on the beach, by design.
• Stay close to your guide. Komodo dragons occasionally wander onto beaches on Komodo Island. Sightings at Pink Beach are rare but real, so don’t wander off solo.

What to Bring to Pink Beach Komodo

Keep your expectations grounded before you go: Pink Beach has no restaurants, hotels, or restrooms. You’ll find a few small local “warung” (food tents) selling refreshments like fresh coconuts, but that’s about the extent of the amenities, and if you’re chasing an untouched drone shot, those stalls might photobomb your frame a little.

There’s no backup plan once you’re on the sand, so pack like you’re heading out for a half-day away from civilization, because you are. Here’s what actually earns its space in your bag:

• Reef-safe sunscreen (non-oxybenzone), the sun here is intense, and regular sunscreen damages the coral and foraminifera that color the beach in the first place.
• A rash guard or light long-sleeve shirt, genuinely better sun protection than reapplying sunscreen every hour, especially if you’re snorkeling.
• Swimsuit, worn under your clothes, there’s nowhere to change once you’re there.
• Snorkeling gear, if you have your own and prefer not to use shared gear, most boats provide it, but bring your own mask if fit matters to you.
• Drinking water, bring more than you think you need; there’s no guarantee of extra supply once you’re on the beach.
• Snacks or specific dietary food, especially if you have allergies or dietary restrictions the warung stalls won’t accommodate.
• Any medication you take regularly, there’s no pharmacy within hours of this beach.
• A dry bag, for your phone, wallet, and anything else you don’t want soaked when you’re getting in and out of the tender boat.
