“I get seasick. Will I be alright on the boat?” is one of the questions our reservations desk answers most often once a guest has picked a Komodo boat tour and is about to choose a date, a boat and a cabin. This guide is the answer we give on WhatsApp, written down: what you can control before you pay the deposit, what only the Harbour Master controls on the day, and what the crew can and cannot do for you once you are on board. It is general information, not medical advice.

Quick answer: Sea sickness on a Komodo boat tour is manageable because three choices are yours: the month (the desk generally recommends May to September), the boat and trip type, and the cabin position (low and central moves least). Take motion-sickness medication before you board, not after symptoms start. Compare the scheduled boats on the Komodo Island sailing tour packages page and ask the desk to steer your cabin choice.

Nothing here removes motion from the sea. What it does is put the three decisions that change how much you feel it in the right order, so that a guest who is prone to sea sickness books a settled month, a cabin that sits low and near the middle of the boat, and a trip type that fits how much control over timing they want. If you are between boats or cabins, send us your dates and we check availability for those exact dates and confirm in writing.

Are the seas around Komodo rough?

Catnazse under way inside Komodo National Park. Catnazse is one of the four boats on the scheduled 3D2N departures booked through the Komodo Luxury reservations desk.

Honest answer: it depends on the month and on the day. Most of a 3D2N route is short hops between islands inside Komodo National Park, where the water is often sheltered by the islands themselves. A few crossings between islands are more open, and those are where guests feel the boat. Which legs feel exposed on a given trip depends on the wind direction and the day, so we do not name them here; the captain reads the conditions and sails the route accordingly.

Two facts sit behind every departure. First, all sailing in the park is regulated by the local Harbour Master (Syahbandar) in Labuan Bajo, who clears boats to sail each day based on official safety guidelines. Second, the source for wind and wave forecasts in these waters is the Indonesian meteorology agency BMKG, whose maritime forecast covers the Labuan Bajo sea area. We do not publish wave-height figures on this page because they change daily; if you want the outlook for your dates, ask the desk in the week before departure and we will tell you what the official forecast and the Harbour Master are saying at that time.

Which months are calmest for a Komodo boat tour?

If sea sickness is your main worry, the month is the first decision. Our desk generally recommends May to September: it is the dry season, with sunny weather and excellent snorkelling visibility. April and October are shoulder months where conditions vary from week to week. December to February is the rainy season; showers and wind come and go, and itineraries are adjusted more often.

PeriodeWhat the desk tells guests who get seasick
May to September (dry season)The months we generally recommend. Sunny weather and excellent visibility for snorkelling. Book early for July and August departures.
April and October (shoulder)Often settled, sometimes not. Ask us for the outlook for your specific dates in the week before departure rather than relying on the calendar.
December to February (rainy season)Wetter and more variable. Sailing continues under the Harbour Master’s daily clearance; routes are adjusted more often. Read our rainy-season guide before booking if you are motion-sensitive.

No month is a promise of flat water, and no month condemns you to a rough one. Seasonal detail lives on three sibling pages so that this one stays focused on sea sickness: can you sail Komodo in the rainy season covers December to February in depth, Komodo weather and climate walks through the year month by month, and the best time to visit Komodo Island weighs weather against wildlife and crowds.

Which cabin is best if you get seasick?

Sanctuary Phinisi sewa kapal Sanctuary Pantai Atap tour Komodo Komodo Luxury
Sun deck on the phinisi Sanctuary. The top deck has the best view and the most movement; sleep lower, sit higher.

This is basic seamanship and it applies to every boat: the lowest, most central cabins move least, because they sit closest to the point the hull pivots around. Cabins high on the upper deck and cabins near the bow move most. The upper deck is the best place to sit by day, with fresh air and a horizon to look at, but it is the worst place to sleep if you are motion-sensitive.

So the rule for a Komodo liveaboard with two nights on board is: sleep low and central, sit high and outside. On a shared 3D2N departure you can only choose from the cabins still open on your date, which is why we ask motion-sensitive guests to tell us before we send the cabin list, not after.

Cabin positions on the four scheduled boats

The four boats on the scheduled 3D2N departures from Labuan Bajo are booked through the Komodo Luxury reservations desk. Cabin counts and guest capacity below are as listed on each boat page, checked 12 September 2026. Naturalia is the only one of the four whose page labels the deck of every cabin; Ayvara, Malca Voyages and Catnazse list their cabins without a deck label, so for those boats the deck position is confirmed by the desk with the boat’s operations team per booking.

Cabin names mean different things on different boats, and a sharing bed is sold differently from a private cabin. Those two topics are covered on their own pages: Komodo boat tour cabin types explains bed layout, bathroom, deck and occupancy class by class, and shared cabin vs private cabin on a Komodo open trip covers privacy and how beds are assigned. Per-person cabin rates are on the Komodo open trip 3D2N page and change by year, so we do not repeat them here.

Does a bigger boat or a private charter help?

Prana Yacht Cruise: Phinisi | Komodo Luxury
The phinisi Prana under sail. Hull length and weight change how motion feels on board; they do not change the sea.

Hull size and weight change how motion feels. A longer, heavier phinisi rides a short chop more slowly than a small day boat, and the movement you feel is a gentler roll rather than a slap. That is physics, not marketing, and it is the honest reason a guest who suffers on speedboats often does better on an overnight boat. It is also as far as the claim goes: we do not attribute stabilisers to any of the scheduled boats, because none of the vessel pages we work from lists them. If a specific vessel has them, its own page or datasheet will say so, and the desk will tell you.

Lamima Yacht Cruise:sewa kapal Phinisi sewa kapal Komodo Luxury
The sailing phinisi Lamima. On a private charter the captain can time the more open crossings around the day’s conditions.

A private charter does not buy calmer seas. What it buys is flexibility: the captain can time the more open crossings for the calmer part of the day, choose anchorages with the wind in mind, pause at a sheltered snorkelling spot when a guest needs an hour of still water, and shift the departure or return hour within the Harbour Master’s clearance. A scheduled open trip runs to a fixed departure with a published route; adjustments still happen, but they are made for the whole boat under the Harbour Master’s direction rather than for one party.

If that flexibility matters to you, start with the private yacht charter Komodo page for whole-boat charters, the private trip packages page for a whole-boat programme on your own dates, or browse the boat charter directory and our fleet to compare hull sizes. Charter rates are quoted per boat and per package on those pages and in your written quotation, so this article carries no prices.

What to do before boarding and on board

Bersantai di Sofa | Lamima Phinisi | Tur Pulau Komodo | Komodo Luxury
Open-air lounge on the phinisi Lamima. By day, a shaded seat with a view of the horizon is the steadiest place on any boat.

The night before, sleep properly, drink water and go easy on alcohol; a tired body reads motion as worse than it is. Eat a light breakfast before pick-up rather than boarding on an empty stomach, and skip heavy, oily or very spicy food until you know how you feel at sea. Pack what settles you: ginger sweets or tea bags, plain crackers, acupressure wristbands if they work for you. Bring your own supply rather than counting on the galley to stock a particular remedy.

If you use motion-sickness medication, take it before you board, following the timing on the product label or your pharmacist’s advice; the common mistake is waiting for symptoms and taking it too late. Bring enough for every sailing day of the trip. The crew cannot prescribe or supply prescription medication, and we do not publish drug names or doses here; that conversation belongs with your doctor or pharmacist before you travel. Tell us at booking if you have a medical condition or limited mobility, because that is an operational question the desk escalates to a person, not a template answer.

Foredeck sun beds on Prana. Fresh air and a fixed point on the horizon are the two things that help most once the boat is moving.

Once the boat is moving, the habits that help are simple and they work on every boat we sail:

  • Sit near the middle of the boat on an open deck, in the shade, facing forward.
  • Keep your eyes on the horizon or on an island, not on your phone or a camera screen. Scrolling is the quickest way to bring nausea on.
  • Breathe fresh air. If you start to feel unwell in a cabin, come up on deck before it builds.
  • Sip water, eat small amounts often, and keep a ginger sweet in your pocket for the open crossings.
  • Tell the crew early. They can suggest a steadier spot on deck and give you space; they cannot make it go away once it has taken hold.

For the water itself: life jackets are available on board and the crew will provide them during water activities, and the snorkelling stops on the scheduled itineraries suit guests with basic swimming skills, with the guides nearby. What we do not claim on this page is any onboard medical service, evacuation cover or insurance. If those are your concerns, read yacht charters for elderly travellers in Komodo for the medical and mobility angle and travel insurance for a Komodo liveaboard for cover, and then ask the desk the specific question so a person answers it.

What happens if the weather turns during the trip?

This is the question behind the question, and the answer is the same one we give every guest. Sailing decisions follow the Harbour Master’s official guidance, and the itinerary is tentative: it may be changed, added to, substituted or shortened depending on weather, sea conditions and the latest instruction from the Harbour Master. If part of the sailing area is affected, the trip generally still operates on an alternative safe route or to alternative destinations, and if the area reopens during your trip the crew will try to bring the highlight stops back in, subject to approval and conditions at the time.

If a trip cannot operate at all because of severe weather or an official closure, handling follows the rescheduling terms of the specific boat and trip, which differ per vessel and are in the Terms and Conditions attached to your booking. The published Komodo Luxury terms state that in cases of force majeure, including adverse weather conditions, the trip may be changed or canceled without a refund. We quote that clause as written so that nobody books on the assumption of a weather refund that the terms do not provide. For the operational side of rough days, read weather safety in Komodo.

Questions our reservations desk hears

Is it safe to sail Komodo in the rainy season if I get seasick easily?

Trips run in the rainy season under the same rule as every other month: the Harbour Master clears sailing each day, and boats go out only when the authorities confirm it is safe to navigate. What changes is comfort and predictability, not the safety decision. If you are prone to sea sickness and your dates are flexible, we would steer you to May to September; if they are not, book a low central cabin and read the rainy-season guide first.

Which months have the calmest seas for a Komodo boat tour?

Our desk generally recommends May to September for sunny weather and excellent snorkelling visibility. We do not publish wind or wave statistics by month, and no month is a promise of flat water. For your exact dates, ask us in the week before departure and we will tell you what the official forecast is saying.

Which cabin should I book on a Komodo boat if I am prone to seasickness?

The lowest, most central cabin still open on your date. On Naturalia that means Lagoon 1 or 2 or Tide on the lower deck, then Sandal or Aurea on the main deck; Azure, Coral and Breeze are on the upper deck. Ayvara, Malca Voyages and Catnazse do not label decks on their cabin lists, so tell us you are motion-sensitive and the desk confirms the deck position of the open cabins with the boat’s operations team per booking before you choose.

Does a private charter mean calmer sailing than a shared 3D2N trip?

No. The sea is the same for every boat on the same day. A private charter gives the captain freedom to time the open crossings, pick anchorages and pause where the water is still, which a scheduled departure with a fixed route cannot offer to one party. A larger, heavier hull also rides a chop more gently. Neither removes motion; both reduce how much of it you feel.

When should I take seasickness tablets before a Komodo boat trip, and does the crew provide them?

Before you board, following the timing on the product label or your pharmacist’s advice, and again on later sailing days as directed; taking it after symptoms start is the usual mistake. Bring your own supply for the whole trip. The crew does not prescribe or supply prescription medication, and this page does not give drug names or doses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you travel, especially if you take other medication.

Who decides whether the boat sails if the sea is rough, and what happens to my itinerary?

The local Harbour Master (Syahbandar) in Labuan Bajo clears sailing each day on official safety guidelines; neither the guest nor the desk overrides that. The itinerary is tentative and may be changed, substituted or shortened. Trips generally still operate on an alternative safe route, and if a trip cannot operate at all, the rescheduling terms of your specific boat and trip apply. The published terms allow the trip to be changed or canceled without a refund in force majeure, including adverse weather.

Where can I check the official sea forecast for Labuan Bajo before my departure?

The Indonesian meteorology agency BMKG publishes a maritime forecast that covers the Labuan Bajo sea area; search for the BMKG maritime forecast for Labuan Bajo waters and read the wind and wave outlook for your departure days. The Harbour Master uses the official guidance when clearing sailing. If you would rather not interpret it yourself, message the desk in the week before departure and we will tell you what the forecast and the Harbour Master are saying for your dates.

To plan a calmer trip, send your dates, group size and the words “prone to seasickness” to the reservations desk on WhatsApp +62 811 3810 8110 or [email protected], or start from the Komodo Island sailing tour packages page and pick the boat you like. During office hours, 09:00 to 17:00 WITA, the desk checks availability for your exact dates and boat, confirms the deck position of the open cabins with the boat’s operations team, and puts everything in writing before any payment. Nobody can promise you a flat sea; we can make sure the three choices that are yours are made well.
