Add the seventh day only if the Wae Rebo trek is realistic for everyone in your group; it is a genuine mountain walk, not a photo stop. And if Komodo National Park is on your list at all, do it as a combo rather than a separate booking — one operator, one handover, one point of responsibility.

Most searches for a Flores boat trip are really searches for Komodo National Park, which sits off the island’s western tip and is reached by boat from Labuan Bajo. But Flores also has one genuine boat day of its own on the north coast — Riung — and knowing which is which saves you from booking the wrong product.

The Riung 17 Islands boat trip is the overland traveller’s sea day. From Riung harbour a local boat threads the small islands of the 17 Islands Marine Park: quiet white-sand beaches, easy snorkeling over shallow reefs, and the mangrove island of Ontoloe, where a colony of flying foxes fills the sky when disturbed from their roosts. It is included as a full day inside our 6- and 7-day overland packages and cannot honestly be compared to Komodo — it is smaller, emptier and slower, and that is its charm.

A simple rule of thumb for choosing: if your priority is reefs, mantas and dragons, book the sea product first and treat the road as the extension. If your priority is villages, volcanoes and the feeling of crossing an island end to end, book the overland first and add the boat as the finale. Hotels are then quoted at the class you actually want rather than the class a bundler pre-decided, and the park tickets are passed through at the official rate. Meals on the road are inexpensive and mostly better taken as your driver-guide suggests — highland warungs in Ruteng and Bajawa are a feature of the trip, not a cost centre. The dry season from April to October is the best time for a Flores tour: reliable roads, clear dawns at Kelimutu and calm seas for the Riung and Komodo boat days. July and August are peak — book Wae Rebo and Moni hotels well ahead in those months.

The rainy months, November to March, do not close the island, but landslides can add delays on the south coast road, and the Wae Rebo trail is far less pleasant in rain. Shoulder weeks in April–May and September–October are the sweet spot: dry-season conditions with the green still on the rice terraces — April and May in particular show Cancar’s spider-web fields at their most vivid, while September usually pairs clear Kelimutu dawns with quieter trails at Wae Rebo. If your dates are fixed in the rainy months, the trip still runs; we simply build an extra half-day of slack into the south coast legs and hold the Riung boat day flexible.
