Reading the island west to east: Labuan Bajo sits at the west tip, home to Komodo Airport (LBJ) and islands like Kelor Island just offshore; the center holds Ruteng’s rice-terrace country and Wae Rebo village up in the Manggarai highlands; center-east is Ende and the three-colored crater lakes of Kelimutu; and the east end is Maumere and Larantuka, the quieter dive-and-culture side of the Trans-Flores road. Its western gateway, Labuan Bajo, is also your jump-off point for Komodo National Park, about an hour’s flight from Bali.

Beyond the main island, the wider region includes neighboring islands like Komodo, Rinca, Adonara, and Solor, with Komodo and Rinca being the two most travelers actually come for. Flores’ highest point is Mount Poco Mandasawu. One thing worth knowing: because Komodo has seen a surge in visitors, the Indonesian government has looked at limiting tourist numbers there, largely to protect the dragons and the island’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage site with high Outstanding Universal Value. At the same time, there’s talk of expanding capacity for trekking on Padar Island, and eventually rolling out more digital infrastructure, online bookings, e-ticketing, as things develop. Mocht je uit Kupang of Makassar op Sulawesi komen, dan zijn er gelukkig rechtstreekse vluchten naar Maumere. Je kunt ervoor kiezen om vanuit Jakarta of Bali in Maumere te landen. Als je een aansluitende vlucht naar Kupang/Makassar wilt nemen met Wings Air of Lion Air, dan is dat alleen op bepaalde weekdagen mogelijk.

c. Vluchten naar Ende, Flores

2. Met veerboten en boten

When the weather is mostly nice and you want to get a new travel experience, sailing with ferries or boats from Bali to Labuan Bajo harbor, Flores can be an option. There are national ships served by PELNI with several classes. You can expect to get large dormitories, kiosks, cafeterias or restaurants. The schedule may vary according to the operators. Yet, in general, the sailing duration will take one to two nights to get to Labuan Bajo. From there, many travelers continue with a Komodo sailing trip from Labuan Bajo before exploring the rest of Flores.

3. Met de bus, veerboten en boten

You can choose to get to Flores Island by land and sea when you have a long travel span and would like to stay in Bali first, then explore Lombok before jumping to Flores island. You will undeniably taste the adventure by taking a bus or taxi service to catch boats or ferries from one harbor to another one. This alternative requires a lot of patience since the schedule can be quite erratic.

At the airport, you may also opt-in with a shuttle bus provided by DAMRI.

The shuttle bus by DAMRI allows you to stop at several points including popular hotels like Hotel Marina Labuan Bajo and Hotel Puri Sari, tourist attractions such as Bukit Sylvia, Kampung Ujung, and Puncak Waringin. If you land on Maumere or Ende, you can take a cross-regencies-shuttle bus like Gunung Mas Bus, or Peduli Trans Bus. The shuttle bus covers various destinations, such as following:

• Ruteng – Aimere – Bajawa
• Ruteng – Einde
• Ruteng – Maumere

Prices are also different for each destination, it ranges from Rp120.000,00 up to around Rp300.000,00. Ferries and airplanes are also available at this rate but the costs will surely be higher than the bus, with a shorter trip duration.

Getting around once you’re settled is easy. You can hop on a bemo (local public transport) or an ojek (motorbike taxi), just note these usually stop running around 9 pm WITA. Prefer to drive yourself? Car rentals (MPV) run around Rp750,000 for 12 hours, and motorbikes/scooters cost Rp90,000–150,000 per day. If you want to reach nearby islands like Rinca or Taman Island, speedboats are readily available; just check the schedule with the operator, pay, and go.

Timing matters more than you’d think here. Like most destinations, July and August (along with June) are peak season, best weather, biggest crowds. Flores runs drier than Java overall, with dry season stretching roughly April through October. In the wet months, roads can get genuinely impassable in places, so it’s worth planning around that.

The wet season kicks in around November and peaks in January–February. Expect more unpredictable weather and occasional road disruptions outside Labuan Bajo, but also thinner crowds and lower prices. Sailing runs year-round through this period, though rough seas can occasionally shift departure times, so it’s worth confirming with your operator before you book. If you want the most comfortable window, aim for April–June, cooler, drier, calmer water, and everything green. Prefer trekking and hiking?
