The journey to Komodo Island begins in Labuan Bajo, a small harbour town on the western tip of Flores that serves as the main gateway to Komodo National Park. There are several ways to cover it: by plane, by boat, or by a chain of ferries and buses. The sections below cover each one, then compare the two routes that matter for most travellers side by side.

Fly or sail? The two routes side by side

Most guests who write to us from Lombok are weighing the same two options: fly to Labuan Bajo and board there, or take the 4D3N sea crossing. The honest way to compare them is not by price alone but by where the days go. A flight moves you to the park gateway in a morning; the crossing spends its first two days at sea past Sumbawa. Both are good trips. They are simply different trips, and the table makes the difference visible.

1. Fly via Bali to Labuan Bajo: the fastest way to Komodo Island

The fastest and easiest way to get from Lombok to Komodo Island is by air. Direct services change seasonally; check current airline schedules, a connection may be needed, and for most visitors that connection is Bali (Denpasar). If a direct service is running on your dates, it removes the Bali connection. Confirm the schedule with the airline rather than with a third-party listing.

Some itineraries route via Jakarta or Surabaya, but Bali is the most common and convenient stop. Door to door, the Lombok to Labuan Bajo journey takes half a day to a day depending on the connection at Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS). The Bali to Labuan Bajo leg itself is about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, with several airlines flying it daily and typical one-way fares of USD 40 to 80 on that sector; the Lombok to Bali leg is a separate ticket and its fare is set by the airline. The harbour sits 10 to 15 minutes from Komodo Airport, which is why a morning arrival can put you on a boat the same day.

How the flight day usually runs

• Morning departure from Lombok (LOP): the earlier the better. A morning Lombok to Bali flight followed by a midday Bali to Labuan Bajo flight lands you in Labuan Bajo in the afternoon with time to check into a hotel and be collected the next morning.
• Connection at Ngurah Rai (DPS): allow a generous buffer. Domestic connections in Bali are routine, but a missed onward flight on a same-day boarding plan costs you the departure, not just the ticket.
• Arrival at Komodo Airport (LBJ): the harbour is a short drive away. Open-trip pick-ups run 08:00 to 09:00 from Labuan Bajo hotels on departure day, which is why we ask most Lombok guests to arrive the evening before.

Pros: Flying is by far the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Komodo. You save at least a full day compared with the ferry and overland route, and flights are far less exposed to sea conditions than any boat, which matters in the wetter months. You arrive rested and spend your holiday days inside the park rather than in transit.

Cons: It costs more than the ferry and bus chain, and a connection in Bali or another city may be needed. Flights can be delayed or rescheduled, so pad your schedule if you plan to join a boat in Labuan Bajo the same day. In high season, seats sell out early, so book the flights as soon as your boat date is confirmed by the reservations desk.

If you would rather make the crossing itself part of the holiday, the one-way Lombok to Komodo boat trip 4D3N sails from Kayangan Harbour in East Lombok to Labuan Bajo on a traditional phinisi, booked directly through the Komodo Luxury reservations desk. It is a shared departure: you book a cabin, not the boat, and sail with other travellers on a fixed calendar. It runs as a one-way Lombok to Labuan Bajo sailing trip, ending at the gateway to Komodo National Park, so there is no backtracking.

This is not merely a Lombok to Komodo 4 days trip; it is a sailing itinerary with stops that are not on any published Labuan Bajo itinerary. Along the way you swim with whale sharks in Saleh Bay when conditions allow, snorkel the reefs around Satonda’s volcanic crater lake, and walk Kenawa’s grassy hill for the view back to Lombok and Sumbawa, before the final stretch brings you to Pink Beach and the dragons. 1. Day 1, Lombok to Kenawa: 07:30 meeting point in Kuta or Senggigi, shuttle across East Lombok to Kayangan Harbour, 11:00 boat departure. Afternoon snorkelling and an optional viewpoint hike on Kenawa Island, then dinner on board as the boat sails overnight toward Saleh Bay.
2. Day 2, Saleh Bay and Satonda: a 05:00 wake-up call for the early whale shark swim near the traditional fishing platforms of Saleh Bay, breakfast under way, a mid-morning visit to Satonda’s saltwater crater lake and reefs, then an overnight sail toward Komodo National Park.
3. Day 3, Komodo National Park: 06:30 snorkelling at Manta Point, mid-morning at Pink Beach, an afternoon visit to Komodo village, and the sunset trek on Padar Island. The boat anchors near the islands for a stable night.
4. Day 4, Kelor and Manjarite to Labuan Bajo: a short summit hike on Kelor Island, a final snorkel at Manjarite, then the sail into Labuan Bajo Harbour around midday, with a complimentary shuttle to your hotel, the airport or a meeting point.

The itinerary is subject to change based on local conditions; wildlife encounters, including the whale sharks, are never promised. Departures require a minimum of ten participants, and if that number is not met the desk offers an alternative vessel for the same date, so a published sailing is not cancelled outright.

Cabins, rates and what is included

The crossing uses a 34 m phinisi with 10 cabins for 18 to 23 guests, all air-conditioned with en-suite bathrooms. Published open-trip cabin rates for the 4D3N crossing run from USD 425 per person (Captain Cabin, bunk beds, porthole view) through USD 465 (Penyu cabins, queen bed) and USD 710 (Paus and Kerang, sea view, one with a private balcony) to USD 755 per person for the Ikan cabins with a private jacuzzi. These are per person, cabin-based, 2026 published rates as shown on komodoluxury.com, checked 11 September 2026; 2027 departures are quoted on request. Children aged three and above pay the full rate.

The rate covers full accommodation on board, all meals and snacks, mineral water, coffee and tea, snorkelling equipment, all excursions on the itinerary, a travel guide and a personal photographer, plus the Day 1 shuttle from Kuta or Senggigi and the Day 4 drop-off in Labuan Bajo. Not included: flights, hotels on land, travel insurance, alcohol, tips, and all entrance fees. Park entry and activity charges are quoted separately for your itinerary. Booking works on a 50 percent deposit, with the balance due no later than 14 days before departure. The 2026 calendar published on the package page runs from April to November, with roughly three departures a month; there are no published departures for December to March, when the crossing faces the roughest conditions of the year. Ask the reservations desk for the confirmed dates before you fix flights into Lombok.

When the crossing does make sense

We recommend flying for most travellers, and we say so plainly on this page, so it is only fair to be equally plain about who should sail instead. The crossing makes sense when the islands between Lombok and Flores are the point of the trip, not an obstacle on the way to it. Saleh Bay, where the crossing’s whale shark swim takes place, is not on any published Labuan Bajo itinerary. Satonda’s crater lake and the reefs around it, Kenawa’s hill, and the Moyo area are simply not on any published Labuan Bajo itinerary. If those names are on your list, the sea route is the itinerary that reaches them.

It also suits travellers who have the days to spend and who like being under way. Two of the three nights are spent sailing on open water rather than at anchor, and some guests find that the best part: dinner on deck as Sumbawa slides past, a 05:00 wake-up for the whale sharks, the first sight of the park from the sea. Others sleep badly on a moving boat and would rather have those nights in a sheltered bay. Be honest with yourself about which you are. If you want the crossing but with more park time, the desk can pair it with a 3D2N Labuan Bajo departure afterwards, with a night in town between the two.

Three practical rules apply. First, check confirmed dates with the reservations desk before booking anything else; the crossing runs roughly three times a month in season, not daily. Second, plan for April to November. December to March is the windiest period on this stretch of water, no departures are published for those months, and even the shoulder weeks at either end can see itineraries adjusted for conditions. Third, treat the wildlife as a hope rather than a guarantee. The whale sharks feed near the traditional fishing platforms in Saleh Bay, but no operator can promise a sighting, and any who does is telling you what you want to hear.

3. Public ferry and overland via Sumbawa: the backpacker route (not operated by us)

For shoestring travellers or those seeking a slower, local experience, it is possible to journey from Lombok to Komodo entirely by public ferries and buses through Sumbawa. This is the lowest-cost way from Lombok to Komodo, but also the longest and the most tiring. We do not operate any part of it and do not publish fares for it; the operators set their own prices and schedules, and both change. The route breaks into three legs:

• Step 1: Lombok to Sumbawa (Poto Tano). Take the public ferry from Kayangan Port in East Lombok to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa. Ferries on this route run around the clock, with the first sailing in the early hours and the last around midnight. You can buy a walk-on ticket at Kayangan or catch a through-bus from Mataram or Senggigi that drives onto the ferry, with the crossing usually included in the bus fare. Expect a crowded, basic ferry with bench seating; board early to find a spot.
• Step 2: Across Sumbawa to Bima and Sape. Sumbawa is a large island. A through-bus from Lombok to Bima continues driving after Poto Tano, and the overland leg takes 8 to 10 hours, often overnight. Without a through-bus, catch a public bus or minivan from Poto Tano to Bima, then a smaller van for the last stretch to Sape, the ferry port for Flores. Aim to reach Sape by early morning.
• Step 3: Sape (Sumbawa) to Labuan Bajo (Flores). A large public ferry connects Sape to Labuan Bajo once a day, typically departing in the morning and arriving in the afternoon after a crossing of about 7 to 8 hours. Miss it and you stay a night in Sape. Extra sailings sometimes run at peak times, but plan around the morning one.

A national ferry operator also runs a large ship on the Lombok to Bima to Labuan Bajo routing, but sailings are infrequent, roughly weekly rather than daily, and the timetable needs checking locally. In total, going from Lombok to Flores via Sumbawa easily takes 24 to 36 hours. A typical pattern is to leave Mataram in the afternoon, ferry to Sumbawa by evening, bus overnight to Bima, wait a few hours, and ferry to Labuan Bajo the next afternoon. Some travellers break the journey with a night in Bima.

Pros: This is the lowest-cost way to reach Komodo from Lombok, and it is an immersive way to see rural Sumbawa, passing through towns and landscapes most visitors skip. With a sense of adventure and patience, it is a memorable journey, and you will meet locals and other backpackers along the way.

Cons: Time-consuming and uncomfortable. Expect hard seats, limited air conditioning and crowding, ferries with minimal amenities, and nights spent on a bus or a ferry bench. Schedules can slip with the weather, connections do not always line up, and by the time the legs are added up the trip can pass 30 hours. We know of no scheduled fast-boat service from Lombok to Komodo in one hop; check any such offer carefully before paying.

What to do if you are already in Lombok or the Gilis

This is the message we receive most often: “We are in Senggigi (or Gili Trawangan, or Kuta Lombok) and want to see Komodo. What is the quickest way?” Here is the plan we give, in order.

Step one: fix the boat date first, then the flights. Cabins, not sailings, are what run out, so we confirm your cabin and departure date before you buy a single air ticket. Open trips board in Labuan Bajo every week: weekend sailings depart on Friday and return Sunday, weekday sailings depart on Monday and return Wednesday. Both follow the same 3D2N route through Padar, Pink Beach, the Komodo dragon trek and Manta Point.

Step two: fly Lombok to Labuan Bajo via Bali, the day before your departure. From the Gilis, get back to Lombok airport in the morning (third-party boats and cars, not booked by us), then take the Lombok to Bali flight and an afternoon Bali to Labuan Bajo flight. Arrive Thursday for a Friday sailing, or Sunday for a Monday sailing, and book a hotel within the Labuan Bajo mainland pick-up area near the harbour. The boat pick-up runs 08:00 to 09:00 on departure day. A same-day join is possible only if your final flight lands early enough for that window, and with a Bali connection in between we do not advise planning around it. Airport pick-up on arrival and the harbour transfer are arranged by our Labuan Bajo team.

Step three: choose a cabin on one of the four phinisi on the open-trip calendar. Step four: fly out from Labuan Bajo, or continue. The boat is back at the harbour between 11:00 and 12:00 on the last day, so choose a departure flight at 14:00 or later. From Labuan Bajo you can return to Lombok via Bali, fly on to Bali for the rest of a holiday, or take the reverse crossing back to Lombok by sea. Guests with more time sometimes add a second 3D2N departure or a Flores overland extension; the desk will sequence it.

Boat trip to Komodo Island from Labuan Bajo

Whether you arrive by plane or by boat, Labuan Bajo on Flores is the final jumping-off point for Komodo National Park. You must board a boat to reach the islands where the dragons live; there is no road or bridge to Komodo Island.

Once you arrive in Labuan Bajo, the harbour is a 10 to 15 minute drive from the airport, and most Komodo boats depart from there. You can start a Komodo boat tour on arrival if your timings allow, or stay overnight in Labuan Bajo and sail the next morning. The town has accommodation from hostels to luxury resorts. From the harbour you can join a Komodo boat trip lasting anywhere from one day to several nights.

C. Full day or one day trip to Komodo Island

If you only have a day or prefer to sleep on land, a day trip by speedboat from Labuan Bajo can cover the highlights (Komodo Island, Padar Island, Pink Beach, Manta Point and more) in a single long day. These are fast and cover a lot of ground, so be ready for a packed day. A day trip from Lombok and back in one day is not something we arrange or recommend; the realistic version is a morning flight to Labuan Bajo, a night in town, the speedboat day, and a flight out that evening or the next morning. Komodo deserves at least two nights on the water if you can spare them.

Book in advance. Especially in July and August or around holidays, Labuan Bajo sees a surge of visitors, and the better cabins on the better boats are often gone months ahead. A confirmed booking is what secures your day, not a hotel reservation alone. Secure the boat early and the rest of the plan falls into place around it.

Best time to go to Komodo Island from Lombok

Generally, the best time to travel from Lombok to Komodo Island is the dry season from April to October. The seas are calmer, visibility for snorkelling and diving is at its best, and rainfall is minimal. If you are flexible with dates, aim for the shoulder months of April to May or September to October, which usually offer good weather without the peak-season crowds at Padar and Pink Beach.

For the Lombok to Komodo journey itself, the two routes behave differently by season. Flights run year-round and are rarely disrupted by sea conditions. The 4D3N crossing is published for April to November only; December to March brings the west monsoon and rougher water on the exposed stretch past Sumbawa, so no departures are listed for those months. Open trips from Labuan Bajo sail every week of the year, and in the wetter months the itinerary is adjusted to the weather (force majeure terms apply), and the park’s islands offer sheltered anchorages. Divers should note that the plankton-rich months around December to March lower visibility, although those blooms are also good months for manta sightings at Manta Point, never guaranteed.

In summary, April, May, September and October strike the best balance of good weather and moderate crowds for either route. If your dates fall between December and March, fly to Labuan Bajo and join a departure there; the crossing waits for the season to turn.
