Labuan Bajo is the gateway town of Komodo National Park — a fishing harbour on Flores’ western tip that grew a marina, an airport and a restaurant scene without losing its sunset. Most visitors treat it as a transit night; the ones who give it a day or two find caves, waterfalls and hill viewpoints that make the boat trip feel earned. Here are the fifteen things actually worth your hours.
1-5 · The Island-Hopping Day
The town’s best “activity” is of course the water: a day (or three) among Padar, Pink Beach, the dragons and the reef line. 6 · Rangko Cave
An hour by car-plus-boat north of town, Rangko is a sea cave holding a turquoise tidal pool under a ceiling of stalactites — swimmable at mid-tide, photogenic always. Go early; the chamber is small and midday belongs to tour groups.
7 · Batu Cermin (Mirror Rock) Cave
Ten minutes from the harbour: a canyon-and-cave complex where a shaft of late-morning light bounces off mineral walls — the “mirror” — plus fossilised coral in the ceiling proving the whole hill was once seabed.
8 · Cunca Wulang Waterfall
The best half-day on land: 90 minutes’ drive into the Mbeliling hills, then a guided 30-minute forest walk to a slot canyon of jade pools and jump ledges. Wear real shoes; hire the local guide at the trailhead — it is their forest.
9-11 · Sunset Trio
Sylvia Hill for the panorama over the harbour islands; Amelia viewpoint for coffee with the same view and less climb; and the water itself — a private sunset cruise through the Kalong channel as the flying foxes rise is the version no hill can match.
12-15 · Town Hours Well Spent
The fish market grills your pick at plastic-table prices; Kampung Ujung’s night-food row does the same with more chairs; dive shops run try-dives in the bay; and the harbour boardwalk at golden hour is the town’s own show — phinisi masts against Flores hills.
