Pasir Timbul — meaning 'emerging sands' in Indonesian — is a tidal sandbar in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia. It appears at low tide as a strip of bright white sand surrounded by shallow, crystal-clear water, and submerges again when the tide rises. It is accessible only by boat and exists for a few hours each day.
Yes — the shallow, calm water immediately around the sandbar makes it one of the more family-friendly stops in Raja Ampat. Children can play on the sand and wade in the shallows. However, deeper water begins within wading distance; children should remain on the sandbar or immediate shallows under close adult supervision. Life jackets should be available on the vessel.
Reef-safe mineral sunscreen (no chemical sunscreens — they damage coral reefs); a hat and rash guard for sun protection on the open sandbar; a waterproof bag for electronics; an underwater camera or housing; water and snacks (there are no facilities on the sandbar). Snorkel gear is worth bringing for the surrounding shallow water.
The sandbar itself is bare sand, but the surrounding water contains coral formations and reef fish. The water clarity is exceptional, with visibility frequently exceeding 15 metres. Do not step on any coral near the sandbar edges, and use only reef-safe sunscreen to protect the reef ecosystem.
Stay within sight of your boat at all times. Do not wade into deeper water without a guide. Apply and reapply reef-safe sunscreen (the sandbar has no shade). Do not step on coral formations near the sandbar edges. Carry all rubbish back to the vessel. Children should remain under close adult supervision near the water.
