A Komodo liveaboard is a multi-day boat trip where you sleep aboard inside Komodo National Park instead of returning to Labuan Bajo each night. The classic format is 3 days / 2 nights covering Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo dragons and manta sites; private whole-boat charters start around USD 1,800/night (market median USD 7,225), while shared open-trip cabins start around USD 300 per person. Is a liveaboard worth it vs day trips?
The park’s best moments happen outside day-trip hours: sunrise on Padar before the crowds, night skies at anchor, and early manta swims. Day boats spend 4–5 hours commuting per day; a liveaboard wakes up already at the site. If you have 2+ days, the liveaboard wins on both time and experience. If you only have one day, take a speedboat day tour (USD 680–4,800/day) instead.
The classic 3D2N itinerary
Day 1: depart Labuan Bajo, Kelor Island snorkel, Rinca or Kalong Island (flying foxes at sunset), anchor overnight. Day 2: Padar sunrise hike, Pink Beach, Komodo dragon trekking at Loh Liang, Manta Point, overnight near Siaba. Day 3: Taka Makassar sandbank, Kanawa or Sebayur snorkel, return by mid-afternoon. Every itinerary flexes with tides, ranger guidance and weather — treat the sequence as a template, not a contract.
What is included (and what is not)
- Included on most boats: cabin with linen, all meals and drinking water, snorkel gear, dinghy transfers, crew and captain, standard itinerary stops.
- Usually excluded: Komodo National Park fees and ranger fees, dive equipment and dive-master (on dive-capable boats), alcohol, crew gratuity, and fuel surcharges for extended routes such as Banta or GAM. Do you need to be a diver?
No. Most Komodo liveaboard guests never dive: the park’s headline experiences — dragons, Padar, Pink Beach, snorkeling with mantas and turtles — are all surface-level. Dive-focused departures exist for certified divers, but on private charters the itinerary is built around whatever your group actually wants.
Private cabin or whole boat?
Shared open trips sell per cabin — fine for solo travelers and couples on a budget (solo travelers join shared departures routinely; ask for a single-cabin rate rather than paying a double). When to go and when to book
The park runs year-round; the dry season April–October is peak, with July–August busiest. Book 3–6 months ahead for July–August departures — demand at our desk grew 189% from March to May 2026 and premium vessels sell out first (market report). January–February brings the highest rain chance and occasional port closures; shoulder months (March, November) trade a little weather risk for better availability and rates.
Safety: what to actually check
Ask any operator four things: life jackets for full capacity, a named captain and crew roster, working radio/communications, and a written emergency plan for overnight routes. Logistics from the airport
Labuan Bajo (LBJ) is a 90-minute flight from Bali. Morning departures need you in Labuan Bajo the night before or on a flight landing by ~08:00; the harbor is 10–15 minutes from the airport. Most liveaboards return by 14:00–15:00 on the final day — book onward flights from 17:00 to be safe.

- Fix your dates and group size first; then choose shared vs private.
- Verify the operator (license, reviews on two platforms, owned-vs-brokered disclosure).
- Get an itemized quote: charter rate, park and ranger fees, VAT, extras.
- Confirm cabin layout against your group — private balconies and en-suites vary widely by class.
- Pay by contract, never to a personal account.
