Mini Wayag
Piaynemo, often called the “mini Wayag,” is a beautiful destination in Raja Ampat known for its striking karst formations and easy accessibility, and it is officially part of the Raja Ampat UNESCO Global Geopark Geosite network. From its iconic viewpoint, you’ll see turquoise lagoons, green karst islets, and the famous Telaga Bintang (Star Lagoon). For guests joining a curated Raja Ampat yacht charter journey, Piaynemo is typically experienced as part of a central Raja Ampat route, offering the chance to enjoy its viewpoint and surrounding lagoons at the most ideal timing and pace within a seamless island-hopping itinerary.
Piaynemo is located approximately 60 kilometres west of Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat Regency, within the Pam Islands (commonly referred to as the Fam Islands in older maps) and is part of the Raja Ampat UNESCO Global Geopark as a designated geosite. It lies in the western sector of the Dampier Strait, opening toward the Halmahera Sea, positioned between Waigeo, Gam, and Batanta islands. The area is surrounded by limestone karst formations, coral reefs, and turquoise lagoons that define the iconic seascape of central Raja Ampat.
Piaynemo is only accessible by boat, with Sorong (SOQ) serving as the main entry point via direct flights from Jakarta, Bali, Makassar, and Manado. From Sorong, travelers continue by ferry, speedboat, or liveaboard to Waisai in about 2 hours, before continuing a 2–3 hour journey west into the Pam Islands where Piaynemo is located, depending on vessel type, speed, and sea conditions. Upon arrival, boats typically anchor offshore and guests are transferred by tender to the jetty, followed by a climb via a well-maintained wooden staircase leading up to the main viewpoint.
With Komodo Luxury’s curated Raja Ampat liveaboard itineraries, Piaynemo is visited as part of a well-sequenced journey guided by an experienced onboard crew who coordinate timing and conditions at sea. Guests are brought to the viewpoint at the most suitable window for a smoother, less crowded experience. The visit is seamlessly integrated into a wider central Raja Ampat route where each stop is planned around tides, weather, and expedition flow.

Questions & Answers
Piaynemo — also spelled Pianemo — is a karst island in the Fam Islands within Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua, Indonesia, approximately 60 kilometres west of Waisai. It is best known for its viewpoint: a wooden stairway of approximately 300+ steps ascending to a platform with a panoramic view of turquoise lagoons, green karst islets below. Piaynemo is a certified Geosite within the Raja Ampat UNESCO Geopark.
Approximately 300+ wooden stairs lead from the base dock to the viewpoint platform at Piaynemo. The climb takes most visitors 15–20 minutes and is considered moderate in difficulty. The stairs are well-maintained and built with holes to allow trees to grow through them — a distinctive conservation feature of the Geosite.
Piaynemo's viewpoint is one of the most family-friendly in Raja Ampat. Children of approximately 7 years and older can complete the wooden stairway successfully. The managed stairs are significantly easier than the raw limestone scramble at Wayag. For older guests or those with moderate fitness concerns, a guide can pace the ascent comfortably. Guests with significant mobility limitations cannot access the viewpoint.
Telaga Bintang (Star Lagoon) is a naturally star-shaped enclosed lagoon visible from the Piaynemo viewpoint platform. When seen from above, the lagoon traces a five-pointed star shape in the turquoise water. It is accessible by boat or kayak from the base of the viewpoint dock and provides a calm, secluded swimming spot within the karst formations.
Melissa's Garden is a shallow reef site near Piaynemo, widely regarded as one of the most spectacular coral gardens in Raja Ampat. It is accessible to both divers and snorkellers, with exceptional hard and soft coral diversity and dense populations of reef fish including anthias, fusiliers, and Napoleon wrasse. The site typically requires calm conditions for the best experience.
